This is the first attempt to research on ancient spies of Korea during Three Kingdoms period. Internally Koguryo(高句麗), Shilla(新羅) and Paekche(百濟) had militarily struggled each other to survive. Externally Sui(隋) and Tang(唐) empires of China had heavily involved in politics of Korean peninsula and thus expanded military struggle among the Three Kingdoms to international level. This circumstance forced Three Kingdoms to give heavy weight on spy activities to win the information war. This study examines spies of Three Kingdoms which had not been reviewed in literature of Korean history properly. I analyse the theory and organization of spies during the period. My findings are as follows. First, spies a socio-historical concept. Normally the existence of spies was not confirmed except some special cases. However, spies was one of intrinsic means of political struggle externally. In particular they were essential in winning wars. In this sense research on spies is necessary and indispensable to know a society or state. Hence scholars in China had studied spies from ancient period and Sun Wu : The Art of War, The book of war was born. Second, Three Kingdoms imported books on war since early times and widely utilized the theory and thought of Sun Wu : The Art of War. And it looks like they had their own book on war. Three, Three Kingdoms mobilized spies heavily and various ways. Koguryo which shared its border with China, utilized spies to get information of China and was different from other countries in that it mobilized Buddhist monks as spies. Shilla used spies in its information war since earlier times than neighbouring countries. In particular general Kim Yoo Sin(金庾信) was prominent in utilizing spies. He knew every and each theories on spies and the way how to utilize them. He was particularly good at taking advantage of spies from enemy states, ‘trick of counter-spy(反間計)’. We need to pay an extra attention to the way how general Kim Yoo Sin utilized spies in history. Paekche also seems to utilize spies from early times but study on this is few due to the limit of historical materials. Yet Japanese sources tell that Paekche also had some efficient military experts. Thus Paekche also seems to utilize spies widely. Four, utilization of spies plays an essential role in ups and downs of an organization, nation and even state. In particular spies are crucial when enemies attacked a state which was divided internally at the same time. This point can be confirmed through the fall of Koguryo. Five, in this context I think my research can contribute to the expansion of the ancient history of Korea and expect other following studies on this subject focusing more widely and deeply.
