The culture of the Three Kingdoms period is thought to develop the original culture through the process of exchanging, imitating, and adopting Chinese culture. It then succeeded in incorporation of aboriginal culture with Chinese, finally producing original Korean culture. It is true that ancient Chinese culture exerted a great influence on the formation of Korean culture. Koguryŏ which actively engaged in exchanges with China in all dimensions including politics, economy, society, and culture must have had deeper and more frequent relationships with China not only due to the geographical closeness but also due to the positive and active nature of people than Paekche and Silla. In the most of the cases of cultural exchanges in the ancient period which were usually caused by warfares and trades, it is certain that rather than a unilateral exchange between two countries, a mutual cultural exchange would happen in spite of the fact that there could be a difference in the degree of acceptance to the other party. Koguryŏ was established in 37 B.C.E. by King Ch’umo in Cholbon Puyo, and continued to be a leader in East Asia until 668 C.E. for about 700 years. During that period, China witnessed the establishments and falls of many countries such as Later Han, Wei-Jin, Northern and Southern Dynasties, Five Barbarians and 16 Kingdoms, Sui, and Tang. Thus, adjoining to the Chinese territory which was in constant turmoil, Koguryŏ could not help but being in wars with several Chinese dynasties. In ancient society, a war was the fastest measures in the transmission of culture which usually caused the mixtures of the culture of the invaders and the culture of the occupied region. However, it is true that so far, we used to emphasize the unilateral acceptance of Chinese culture in understanding the formation of ancient Korean culture. In the present study, as opposing the previous view, I chose Korean Stoneware Pillow as a case study showing the influence of Korea on Chinese culture in the Three Kingdoms period. I shall reveal making date and original content of Korean Stoneware Pillow to show the independence and originality of Korean at that time. That is, throughout the study of Koguryŏ Stoneware Pillow which was a traditional burial object of Koguryŏ and which had an impact on Chinese Stoneware Pillow, I will prove the fact that Koguryŏ culture also transmitted to China. In addition, I will discuss Stoneware Pillow in Koguryŏ, Paekche, Silla, and Kaya in the Three Kingdoms period as well as Stoneware Pillow in China. And then I will compare and analyze the similarity and difference among each country, and investigate the transmission process of Stoneware Pillow to China as one of the burial culture in ancient society. In Chapter 2, I will examine the origin and development process of Korean Stoneware Pillow and then that of Chinese Stoneware Pillow in order to compare the origin and characteristics of Stoneware Pillow in China and Korea. In Chapter 3, I shall study features of ornamental patterns on Koguryŏ Stoneware Pillow with an inscription. I will also discuss calligraphical style and translation of an inscription. I shall then find out the production technique and characteristics of Stoneware Pillow. In Chapter 4, I will study the transmission process of Koguryŏ Stoneware Pillow to Paekche, Silla, Kaya, and China as well as the development of Korean Stoneware Pillow which developed on the basis of Koguryŏ Stoneware Pillow. In Chapter 5, I shall try to find out the historical and art historical significance of Koguryŏ Stoneware Pillow with an inscription. Although there is a difficulty in grasping the entire picture of the culture of Koguryŏ Stoneware Pillow with the limited number of extant relics, I was fortunately able to conduct research with some extant relics and Stoneware Pillow with an inscription.
