영문 초록

Sin Chae-ho is a veteran of the Korean national movement and regarded as one of its "fathers". This article is to aim at reviewing the formative backgrounds and the logical structures of his thoughts on nationalism in the midst of rising of the theory on de-nationalism lately. The spirit of Sin Chae-ho was expressed in nationalism he has adopted as the basis of his thoughts on a national rights recovery and an independence movement. His thoughts on nationalism was composed of a rudimentary national vision, a republicanism, and a reconstruction of the ancient history of Joseon, as can be spoken for the idea of radical national rights recovery in the late of Joseon period and the trend of thoughts in a circle of independence movement in 1910s. On the basis of the rudimentary national vision, he asserted that a nation was inherent thing, a ‘absolute independence', which could not separated from a state. So with this viewpoint, he sought after the identity of Korean people, and he emphasized that Dangun was ‘the Grandfather’ of Korean people and our nation was a kind of community of all over this country and all the people, which was an ethnic group on the root of Buyeo(부여) and Goguryeo(고구려). On the one hand Sin Chae-ho developed the rudimentary national vision, on the other hand a modern nation or nation state. He regarded a consciousness of national political rights and a patriotism in modern Europe as a driving force of national rights recovery. In other words, he thought it was necessary for Korea to be transformed into a nation state. His thoughts on a state made importance of blood-line and value of tradition, but it did'nt mean the idea of a state-organism. Even if he recognized value of tradition, he strictly criticized the traditional culture of ruling class. Noteworthly, Sin Chae-ho's thoughts on nationalism contained something of republicanism, not reactionism. The making of this kind of idea, therefore, was a sign of the formation of modern nationalism meeting the needs of that times.
