문명의 충돌과 테러리즘의 기원

국문 초록

‘테러리즘’의 역사를 추적하는 것은 ‘테러러리즘’의 원류를 찾아내고, ‘테러리즘’의 본질에 대한 이해를 돕기 위한 것이라고 할 것이다. 즉, 현재 일어나고 있는 ‘근시안적인’ 면에서의 연구로는 당면한 ‘대응테러’(counter terrorism)의 수단으로 전락하기 쉽다. 테러리즘에 대한 이해의 폭을 확장하여, 근본적 해결책을 강구하기 위해서는 좀 더 원초적이고, 폭넓은 연구가 선행되지 않으면 안 될 것이다. 즉, 그 분석의 시각이 역사, 문화, 정치, 경제를 망라할 수 있어야 한다는 것이다. 왜냐하면, ‘테러리즘’이라는 개념이 ‘메가 컨셉션’(mega conception)이기 때문이다. 이 연구에서는 아놀드 토인비(Arnold J. Toynbee)의 역사를 보는 시각과 단위를 차용하고, 레비스트로스의 ‘심층구조’(deep structure)에 착안하여, 테러리즘을 문명사적인 시각을 중심으로 연구하였다. 연구의 결과, 오늘날에 있어서도, 특정한 종교적 교리나 문명이 세계 공동체를 이끌어 나가야 한다는 시각이 테러리즘의 공급처가 되고 있다는 사실을 확인할 수 있었다. 특히, ‘이슬람 원리주의’ vs. ‘기독교적 원리주의’라는 대립구도가, 문명간 충돌을 초래함으로써, 치명적인 ‘자기파괴’를 행하고 있다고 지적하고 있다. 이러한 ‘문명의 충돌’에 수반되는 테러리즘의 확산은 ‘자만성’과 ‘오만성’의 심층에 자리 잡은 ‘핵심적 문명 컴플렉스’(nuclear civilization complex)와 관련된다고 보고 있다. 마지막으로, 잔혹한 ‘테러리즘의 종언’(end of terrorism)은 문명 간의 충분한 담론의 수단(discourse among civilization)을 확보할 때 가능하다고 본다.

영문 초록

Tracing back the history of ‘terrorism’ is for finding the headwaters of ‘terrorism’ and assisting in the understanding of its nature. The starting point of such improvident understanding can easily turn into ‘counter terrorism’ in hand with the current myopic researches. More initial and comprehensive study must precede in order to consider essential solutions by expanding the scope of understanding of terrorism. In other words, such analysis should be able to encompass comprehensive perspectives including historical, cultural, and political economy ones because ‘terrorism’ is a ‘mega conception’. Employing the historical perspectives and units by Arnold J. Toynbee and getting an idea from the ‘Deep Structure’ of Lévi-Strauss, this study investigated terrorism mainly in the viewpoint of ‘history of civilizations’. As a result, it was confirmed that the provision of terrorism was the idea that certain ‘doctrines’ or ‘civilizations’ should lead the ‘global community’ even today. It was also pointed out that the confrontational structure of ‘Islamic Fundamentalism’ vs. ‘Christian Fundamentalism’ caused ‘clashes of civilizations’ and thus led to deadly ‘self-destruction’. Accompanying such ‘clashes of civilizations’, the spread of terrorism is related to the ‘nuclear civilization complex’ embedded in the ‘deep structure’ of ‘self-conceit’ and ‘arrogance’. Finally, the ‘end of brutal terrorism’ will only come when means for ‘enough discourse among civilizations’ are secured.
