영문 초록

Visual anthropology, a subfield of cultural anthropology, has been established in many universities in Europe and the U.S.A. and brought out lots of meaningful results in research. But in Korea visual anthropology is a relatively unknown subject. although many experts in visual business recognize its usefulness. In western society the curriculum of visual anthropology consists of many courses which are closely connected with one another. These courses are also linked with the curriculum of cultural anthropology. That is certainly an ideal combination for the purpose of training visual anthropologists. Unfortunately, in Korea such a curriculum cannot be offered owing to the situation in its universities, which are quite different from that of their counterparts in the West. My teaching methods on visual anthropology have developed in the soil of such quite a ‘different’ situation in some universities in Korea to which I am professionally affiliated. My concern is how to train as visual anthropologists graduate and undergraduate students from a Korean background totally different from that of the West. Having learned through trial and error, now I can finally suggest my five teaching instructions on visual anthropology specifically designed in consideration of the domestic circumstances. - Shooting and analysing still photos - Producing short movies on anthropological themes - Analysing short documentaries with the holistic view - Comparative studies on ethnological films - Analysing different styles of ethnological films Certainly the above curriculum would not be the best one, but can possibly be of the best way to train the visual anthropologists under the educational circumstances in Korea.
