영문 초록

This paper examines object control constructions involving tolok-clauses in Korean. The primary goal of this paper is to answer the following three questions: (ⅰ) How can tolok-clauses be characterized?; (ⅱ) What is the categorial status of controlled null subjects?; (ⅲ) How are controllers determined? With newly proposed diagnostics, I first show that the tolok-clauses are infinitival complements which do not have a functional category encoding sentential mood (e.g., Mood Phrase). Then, building on Hornstein’s (1999, 2001) Movement Theory of Control, I argue that the obligatory control dependencies in the tolok-control constructions are derived by A-movement of the controller, and that the controlled subject is a copy of the moved element. Furthermore, assuming with Monahan (2003) that the so-called backward control is available in the tolok-control constructions, this paper offers a principled account for how the backward control reading arises. Specifically, I suggest that Chain Reduction, a deletion operation for chain linearization at PF, can cyclically apply by phase in backward control.
