국문 초록

본 논문은 배당의 움직임을 설명하는 Linter (1956)의 모형의 틀에서 배당성향과 세율 간의 관계를 분석한다. 본 논문이 갖는 주된 특징은 다음과 같다. 첫째 배당성향에 영향을 주는 배당세율과 자본이득세율의 상대적인 크기는 Poterba (2004)의 배당세 선호도의 개념을 이용하여 측정한다. 둘째 배당세 선호도의 지속적이고 큰 변화에 대응하여 배당성향이 어떻게 반응하는 가를 분석하기 위해 배당세 선호도의 평균에 몇 개의 국면이 존재하는 국면전환 모형을 적용한다. 셋째 이차대전 이후 있었던 배당의 변동성 하락을 국면전환 형태로 모형에 반영한다. 1930-2002기간의 S&P 500 포트폴리에오 대한 배당 자료와 배당세 선호도 자료에 대한 분석 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째 고변동성 시기의 배당성향이 저변동성 시기의 배당성향보다 더 높은 경향이 있다. 둘째 배당세 선호도와 배당성향 사이에는 양의 관계가 있다. 이는 배당세 감세정책이 경기 활성화를 위한 유효한 수단이 될 수 있음을 암시한다.

영문 초록

This article examines the relationship between the dividend payout and tax preference in the context of the Linter model (1956) using US data for the period of 1930 to 2002. The innovations of the paper are three fold: first, we use the dividend tax preference measure from Poterba (2004) for the relative tax burden on dividends and capital gain. Second, regime switching models are employed to investigate the long-run impact of changes in tax preference on dividend payout. Third, these models are specified to account for the post-war volatility decline in the dividend payout. The following empirical findings are presented in the article: first, it appears that firms assigned higher payout in the high dividend volatility period than the low volatility period. Second, our estimates suggest that the tax preference is positively related with the payout. An implication of the findings is that the dividend tax can be an effective counter-recess ion policy instrument.
