국문 초록

본 연구는 한국제조업의 기술혁신과 시장구조와의 관계를 2006년 기업별 원시자료를 바탕으로 분석하였다. 분석을 통해 얻어진 결과는 전반적으로 슘페터가설이 지지근거가 약하다는 사실과 그 반대 논리에 대한 실증적 결과들도 강하가 나타나지 못하였다는 점이다. 분석결과에서 시장집중도와 R&D집약도 간에 유의성을 가지는 결과가 보여지지 않았으며 역U자형 가설도 통계적 유의성을 가지지는 못하였다. 산업내 R&D비율은 높은 유의성을 보이고 있는 것으로 나타났으며 이는 앞으로 산업정책 과정에서 산업전반의 R&D투자 활동을 적극적으로 추진하는 여건을 마련하는 것이 기술혁신에 크게 기여할 수 있음을 보여주고 있다. 시장 동태적변화를 반영하는 CR3 변화율 변수는 부분적으로 의미있는 결과를 보이며 CR3와 기술혁신 관계의 방향성을 보완해주는 역할을 하고 있다. 전유성 변수에서는 계수값은 미미하지만 기술혁신 활동에 미치는 유의성은 높은 것으로 나타났다.

영문 초록

This paper investigates the relationship between product market competition and innovation on the Korean manufacturing industries. The traditional analysis of innovation has focused on the Schumpeterian hypothesis of a positive link between market power and innovation. Theoretical models predict that more monopoly power has both positive and negative effects on R&D. Empirical evidence based on 2006 Korean Innovation Survey (KIS) dataset suggests that firm size, industrial R&D activity play an important role in manufacturing innovation. The findings on the influence of industry-level characteristics are mixed - the propensity to innovate is positively correlated to market concentration but the evidence is inconclusive. The analysis shows that does not support the Schumpeterian hypothesis. The coefficients on the competition measure are positive but in significant. This result implies that can’t find strong evidence of market competition stimulates on innovative activity. At the economy wide level, there is some reason to believe that competition is positively related to innovation. Finally, while the debate on the effect of market structure on R&D is far from being solved , the results suggest that more attention should be paid at the effect of market structure on the decision of firms to perform R&D or not.
