영문 초록

The study focuses on various issues of world Englishes. It particularly attends to the following three issues: 1) linguistic imperialism vs. econocultural motivation, 2) Standard English ideology vs. world Englishes paradigm, and 3) pedagogical issues. The study first reviews a number of studies in general and the studies that are related to the expanding circle in particular. It then reviews in detail the studies of English/world Englishes in the Chinese and Japanese contexts because most of the characteristics of ELT in these two countries are shared by ELT in Korea. It also reviews the studies of English in Korea. On the basis of resulting findings from these reviews, the present study makes some suggestions. The suggestions include an attention to the linguistic imperialism theory, rejection of the native speaker fallacy in developing English textbooks and tests (the TOEIC in particular), and introduction of critical pedagogy in English teacher education.
