연결어미 ‘-기에’와 ‘-기로’의 형성에 관한 고찰

국문 초록

본고는 연결어미 ‘-기에’, ‘-기로’의 형성 과정을 다룬 것이다. 연결어미 ‘-기에’, ‘-기로’의 형성은 명사형 어미와 조사의 결합인 ‘-기’+‘-에’, ‘-기’+‘-로’에서 문법화를 경험한 것이다. 명사화소 ‘-기’가 형태론적 요소에서 통사론적 요소로 기능이 확대됨에 따라 재분석이 일어날 환경이 조성되고, 명사형 어미와 조사의 쓰임이 늘어 남에 따라 문법화되어 연결어미로 된 것이다. [기에] 및 [기로]는 명사형 어미와 조사의 결합일 때와 연결어미일 때 모두 표면형이 동일하므로 형태적, 통사적, 의미적 기준에 따라 구별을 해 보아야 한다. ‘-기에’, ‘-기로’의 문법화는 동일한 과정으로 설명할 수 있다. 둘은 비슷한 시기에 문법화를 경험하고, 연결어미로 굳어진 이후에는 쓰임이 급격히 증가한다. 문법화된 ‘-기에’, ‘-기로’는 [이유]의 의미로 해석되며, 선어말어미가 연결된다. 이들의 문법화는 17세기에 시작되었으며 18세기에 매우 발전한다. 그러나 20세기 후반에는 쇠퇴의 길로 접어든다.

영문 초록

This study treats the development of the conjunctive endings, ‘-kiey’ and ‘-kilo’, both of which resulted from the grammaticalization of the nominalizer ‘-ki’ + the particles ‘-ey’ and ‘-lo’, respectively. As the nominalizer ‘-ki’ extended its function from that of a morphological element to a syntactic one, this gave rise an environment conducive to reanalysis; and as the use of nominal form + particle increased, grammaticalization ensued. Because the cases of [-kiey] and [-kilo] as nominal form + particle as opposed to connective ending appear identical on the surface, they must be distinguished on the basis of morphological, syntactic and semantic criteria. The grammaticalization of both ‘-kiey’ and ‘-kilo’ can be explained by the same processes. Both experienced grammaticalization at a similar time and after becoming fixed as conjunctive endings, the usage of both increased abruptly. Grammaticalized ‘-kiey’ and ‘-kilo’ are interpreted with the meaning [REASON], and connect with prefinal endings. The grammaticalization of these endings began in the 17th century and developed significantly in the 18th century. But by the end of the 20th century this process had begun to decline.
