연결어미 ‘-과뎌’의 통시적 고찰

국문 초록

본고는 연결어미 ‘-과뎌’의 성격을 규명하기 위해 통시적으로 그 변화 과정을 살핀 연구이다. 16세기에 ‘-과뎌’가 직접 화법 구문이 아닌, 간접 화법 구문에도 사용되는 예가 늘어나기 시작하면서 ‘-과뎌’ 구문의 하위문 주어로 제삼자가 아닌 상대도 올 수 있게 되었는데, 이러한 ‘-과뎌’ 구문의 변화는 근대국어의 ‘-과뎌’가 명령법 어미로도 기능하게 만드는 단초가 된다. 한편 근대국어의 ‘-과뎌’는 다양한 형태로 실현되어 당시 ‘-과뎌’와 마찬가지로 형태 변화를 겪었던 ‘-고져’와 형태상으로 구별하기 어렵게 되며 주변의 여러 가지 영향으로 통사적 환경에도 변화를 입게 된다. 이후에 ‘-과뎌’는 여러 가지 이유로 인해 소멸하게 되고 현대국어에서는 그 빈자리를 명사형 어미 ‘-기’가 주로 채우게 된다.

영문 초록

This article examines the process of historical change in the -kwatye structure in order to reveal the feature of this connective endings. The use of -kwatye in direct quotations increased in the 16th century, and moreover it became possible for interlocutors, rather than just third persons, to function as subject in the embedded clause. This change appears to have been an important clue explaining how the ending -kwatye came to function not only as a connective ending, but also as an imperative ending in modern Korean. On the other hand, the ending -kwatye in modern Korean is realized in various forms; just like earlier -kwatye, the ending -kwocye has undergone various changes, and is now different to distinguish from -kwatye, and dues to various influences, has also undergone changes in its syntactice functions. Later -kwatye became obsolete for various reasons and in contemporary Korean -ki has taken over most of its functions.
