조사 ‘-로’의 ‘대상성’에 관한 통시적 연구

국문 초록

15세기 국어의 조사 ‘-로’는 ‘대상’의 기능을 가지고 실현되었다. 기존 논의에서는 이러한 ‘-로’를 모두 ‘도구격’의 범주 안에서 다루었다. 그러나 이 글에서는 ‘대상’의 ‘-로’가 실현되는 구문을 검토하고 대상의 ‘-로’와 도구의 ‘-로’의 통사.의미적인 차이를 들어 ‘-로’의 ‘대상성(objectivity)’을 논증하고자 했다. ‘대상’의 ‘-로’가 통합한 명사구는 문맥상 서술어의 목적어로 실현되고, 내포문의 주어가 ‘-로’ 명사구로 실현되는 등의 통사적 특성이 있다. 또한 대상의 ‘-로’가 통합한 명사구는 경우에 따라 [+animate]의 명사구를 허용하기도 한다. 이러한 특성은 ‘도구’의 ‘-로’ 구문에서는 실현되지 않는다. 아울러 이러한 ‘-로’의 실현과 한문의 ‘以’의 영향 관계에 대해서도 논의했다. 마지막으로 한글 창제 이전 차자표기 자료에서 ‘대상’의 ‘-로’가 실현된 예들을 검토함으로써 대상의 ‘-로’가 고대국어에서부터 존재했음을 살폈다. 나아가 근대국어의 문헌을 검토하여 ‘-로’의 대상적 용법이 근대국어로 갈수록 점점 약해진다는 사실에 대해서도 논의했다.

영문 초록

The particle -lo was realized with the function of theme (taysang) in the 15th century. Previous studies have described -lo as the instrumental case. However, this article investigates the structures in which the -lo of theme is realized, and demonstrates the objectivity (taysang-seng) of -lo by enumerating the syntactic and semantic differences between thematic/objective -lo and instrumental -lo. A noun phrase with the -lo of theme has syntactic features such as a) contextually, it is realized as an object of the predicate, b) the subject of the embedded clause is realized as a -lo noun phrase, etc. Moreover, depending on the case, noun phrases marked by thematic/objective -lo sometimes allow [+animate] noun phrases a feature not found with the instrumental -lo construction. In this connection, this paper discusses the relation between the realization of -lo and the effect of hanmun ‘以 (i)’. Finally, through an investigation of thematic/objective -lo in pre-alphabetic Korean texts prior to the 15th century, we show that this usage existed since the time of Ancient Korean. The paper also demonstrates that thematic/objective -lo gradually weakens infunction during the transition from Middle Korean to Modern Korean.
