국문 초록

이 글의 목적은 둘 이상의 사건이 결합되는 접속문에서 사건구조의 상적 특질이 매우 중요한 영향을 미치는 현상을 보이는 데에 있다. 그리고 그 원인을 연결어미가 가진 상적 기능, 특히 스미스(1991)의 ‘관점 상(viewpoint aspect)’ 기능으로 설명하려는 데에 있다. 예를 들어 VP 층위의 접속문을 이끄는 연결어미 ‘-면서’, ‘-어서’ 그리고 ‘-고’에 결합되는 사건구조의 종류는 매우 제약되어 있으며, 사건구조의 종류에 따라 동일한 연결어미의 의미가 달라지는 양상을 보인다. 이렇게 다양한 사건 유형의 결합에 따라 연결어미의 의미가 각각 다르게 나타나는 원인은 연결어미 가운데 내재되어 있는 관점 상 기능으로 설명될 수 있다. 연결어미는 선행절의 사건에 결합하여 그 사건의 어느 하위 사건에 초점을 둘 것인가를 결정하는 관점 상 기능을 갖는다. ‘-면서’는 미완료의 관점 상을, ‘-고’와 ‘-어서’는 완료의 관점 상을 나타낸다. 한편 어떤 서술어들은 하나 이상의 상적 분류에 속하는 것처럼 행동하는 ‘상적 전이(aspect shift)’ 현상을 보인다. 선행절의 사건이 각각 다른 곳에 초점이 주어지는 상적 전이를 보이는 것은 연결어미의 상적 의미와 후행하는 사건과의 추론 관계에 의하여 강제된 결과라고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This paper demonstrates the phenomenon whereby the aspectual properties of events have an extremely important effect on the interpretation of conjunctive sentences conjoining two or more events. An explanation for this phenomenon is sought in the aspectual function carried by connective endings, using Smith’s(1991) ‘viewpoint aspect’. For example, the types of event structure associated with connective endings like -myense, -ese, and -ko forming conjunctive constructions at the VP-level are very restricted. In addition, the meaning of the same connective ending differs according to the kind of event. The fact that the meaning of connective endings such as these changes depending on their connection to various event types is explained by the viewpoint aspect function inherent to each connective ending. Each connective ending contains a viewpoint aspect function which, when the ending combines with the event of the preceding clause, determines which sub-event gets emphasized. Thus, -myense shows imperfective viewpoint aspect, and both -ko and -ese have perfective viewpoint aspect. On the other hand, some predicates show ‘aspect shift’, a phenomenon whereby they behave as if they belong to more than one aspectual class. The reason that the preceding event shows a different focus in sub-events can be explained as a coercion effect due to the inferential relationship between the meaning of the connective ending and the event in the following clause.(Seoul National University)
