국문 초록

폴란드 현대문학을 대표하는 작가인 이바스키에비츠(Oaroslaw Iwaszkiewicz. 1894-1980)는 소설， 희곡， 시， 수필， 기행문， 음악관련 논문 등을 발표했고， 여러 분야에서 많은 활동을 벌였다. 『빌코의 아가씨들』은 양차대전 기간에 발표된 이바스카에비츠의 소설 가운데 가장 뛰어난 작품이라고 인정받는 중편으로서， 당시에 성행하던 모더 니즘의 틀에서 벗어나 보편적 정서와 시대와 연결된 문제들을 조화롭게 형상화시켰다는 평을 받고 있다. 삼십 대 후반의 주인공 빅토르 루벤(Wiktor Ruben)은 친구의 죽음에 충격을 받고， 의사의 권유로 심신의 안정을 위해 3주 동안 조용한 시골로 요양을 떠나게 된다. 그가 선택한 장소는 15 년 전， 젊은 날에 잠시 머물렀던 빌코 (Wilko) 이다. 그때 빅토르는 빌코에 살고 있던 여섯 명의 아가씨들과 만나 그들과 각기 다른 추억을 나누었다. 이제 빅토르는 15년 만에 꿈과 추억을 간직하고 있는 자신의 과거 속으로 여행을 떠나게 된다. 그가 찾아간 젊은 날 추억의 빌코에서 그는 환대를 받았지만， 긴 세월의 흔적은 모든 것에 뚜렷하게 남아 있다. 옛날 그는 꿈 많은 20 대 초반의 청년이었으나， 지금은 30 대 중반의 풀이 죽은 농장관리인으로 변해 있다는 것을 빌코의 여인들은 실감한다. 이전에 그는 빌코에서 무엇이나 할 수 있는， 모든 사람으로부터 사랑받던 청년이었으나， 지금은 그의 역할을 기대하는 사람이 아무도 없다. 그는 이 제 빌코에서 펼요한 인물이 아니다. 또한 옛날 10 대와 20 대의 발랄하고 아름답던 아가씨들은 지금은 모두 결혼하여 자기 일에 매달려 있어서， 빅토르에게 내줄 수 있는 시간도， 마음의 여유도 거의 가지고 있지 않다. 휴가가 끝날 무렵 빅토르는 다시 일상으로 돌아가기 위해 예정된 휴가를 나흘이나 앞당겨 행랑을 꾸린다. 15 년 전처럼 올라가 언덕에서 그를 배웅한다. 빅토르는 빌코여행을 통해서 삶의 덧없음과 무엇을 완전히 소유한다는 것은 불가능한 일이라는 것을 깨닫는다 또한 추억속의 젊고 아름다운 여인들에게서 세월이 남겨놓은 세속적 일상의 편린을 발견하고는 다시는 빌코를 찾지 않겠다고 결심하며 떠난다. 아름다운 추억은 건드리지 말았어야 하는 것이 아닐까 하는 아쉬움이 『빌코의 아가씨틀』에는 배어있다.

영문 초록

Jaroslaw Iwaszkiewicz 0894-1980) is one of the most famous writers of the 20th century in Poland. He is an unusually prolific writer of wide range of interests. Although he is most widely known for his short stories and novels, Iwaszkiewicz also wrote poems, plays and essays; in addition to these, he translated numerous literary works by French, English, Russian and Danish writers. i'panny z Wilka.o (The Young Girls of Wilko, 1932) is his most famous novel, which was made into a film in 1979. Wiktor Ruben, a farm manager, is shocked by his friend’s death and feels weak. Following this event, a doctor advises him to take a rest on the countryside. Ruben then decides to go to a gentry house in Wilko. Fifteen years ago, he had given private lessons here to a girl of a family with six daughters between six and twenty-one years of age. Since then, he no longer had contacts with them and thus knew nothing of what happened to them. He merely thinks that the family might have forgotten him. Yet when he arrives, his assumptions are proven false. Now in the twenties and mid-thirties, Julcia, Jola, Zosia, Kazia and Tunia cordially welcome him. Upon his arrival, Ruben hears that the most beautiful of the six, Fela, died ten years ago. Yet surprisingly, nobody in the family seems to be interested in Fela. In fact, it seems she is even entirely forgotten. As Ruben spends more time in Wilko, his romantic memories with the four oldest girls return. He recalls taking endless walks, going swimming, playing tennis and going horseback-riding with them. He enjoyed his holidays with Julcia, who spoke very little, with Jola, who was very lively, and with Fela, who took off her swimming suit, forgetting that Wiktor was there. During his stay at his uncle’s in the neighborhood, Wiktor remembers his past experiences, especially those with the girls, as clearly as today. It feels to him as if he went back fifteen years in time. Yet, when he talks to the girls, Ruben recognizes that it’s not the same. After all, Julcia, lola and Zosia have changed in the last fifteen years. It may be that they talked about him before he returned; now they all have their own businesses to worry about. When he leaves Wilko four days earlier than planned, each of the girls shows a different reaction. While Julcia seems indifferent, Zosia asks if he will come back in fifteen years; Kazia gives him a package of food and lola escorts him back to the place where she bid him farewell fifteen years ago. As he moves away from Wilko, he feels confident, strong and good-humored and thinks about his farm back home. Although he very much doubted it in Wilko, Ruben slowly returns to his every day life.
