영문 초록

Before the break-up of Yugoslavia, the former Yugoslavia was consisted of six republics. It means that every republic have its own nations. So we can very easily find out that they had very complicating historical backgrounds. Even though nationalism is one of the most powerful forces in this modern world, yet its study has until recently been relatively neglected. As an ideology and movement, nationalism exerted a strong influence in the Yugoslav literature. And the themes which I wanted to find out in Nobel prize winner, Ivo Andrich's literary works are the concept 'nationalism' and the solution. He would like to propose that nationalism has to be understood by aligning it, not with self-consciously held political ideologies, but with the large cultural systems that preceded it, out of which-as well as against which - it came into being. In this essay I tried to deal with all Andrich's novels, including short stories; The Journey of Alija Gjergjelez, The Bridge on the Jepa, The Damned Yard, In the Guest-House, The Days of the Consuls, Death in Sinan's Tekke, The Bridge on the Drina river, and so forth. This research which tries to find out the concept 'nationalism' in Ivo Andrich's literary works is very interesting and useful to understand small nation's culture and history. And through his novels the ideology in the former Yugoslavia was not ethnic nationalism, but multi-cultural nationalism. Finally, it was not difficult to find out a specific Andrich's suggestion and solution: harmony, conciliation, and understanding with each nations. And also I keep pace with study about the first serbian linguistic reformer, Vuk Stefanovich Karajich who perceived that a language is the most important characteristic feature of a nation.
