Pericles, the first one in Shakespeare's romance plays has been known
as the work to test romance patterns employing motifs such as shipwrecks,
adversity at the sea, lost children, marvelous visions, family separation and
reunion.
This article purposes to explore the process retrieving Pericles's lost
identities based on maternity and how he reconstructs his family and
kingdom. Especially, Pericles, the central figure in the play is a father and
ruler of Tyre. He has a variety of experience with himself sea-tossed.
Through his repeated sea-suffering he unexpectedly loses his identities-a
patriarch and monarch and recovers them with the help of female
characters in the end. It is remarkable that the role of the female figures
is not limited to patriarchal instrument in Pericles. Their positive maternal
power plays a significant part in relieving Pericles's suffering, rehabilitating
his power and reuniting his families.
It is certain that maternal power play a significant role on central male
figures escaping from their suffering rehabilitating their power as fathers
and rulers, and harmonizing with their families, and others. The romance
plays show it is impossible for men to accomplish absolute patriarchal
order, further revalidation of kingly authority without the help of maternal
power.
In the final scene, Thaisa and Marina lose previous active energies and are rather silent against Pericles. It is considered that women in the play
are supposed to intend not to completely incorporate themselves into the
men-centered patriarchal society. Therefore, it is difficult to accept the
fact that Pericles succeeded in recovering his identities completely and
establishing his absolute kingdom.
