The purpose of this study was to investigate the health-related life style,
disease, psychological aspects and dietary practice of the elderly in

interviewed using a questionnaire between April 12th and 14th, 2008. 81.5%
and 44.8% of males and females lived with their spouses, respectively. In
health related life style, there were more male subjects (44.8%) who
reported to smoke cigarettes than female subjects (8.1%) and there were
more female subjects (36.6%) who drank alcohol than male subjects
(16.7%). There were more male subjects (50.0%) who reported to exercise
than female subjects (31.7%). 72.3% of the subjects had known cases of
prior diseases. While the most prevalent cases of male subjects were
hypertension, indigestion, stomach problem, diabetes mellitus, rheumatism,
the most prevalent cases of female subjects were rheumatism, indigestion,
obesity. There were significantly higher prevalences of rheumatism and
osteoporosis in females than males(p<0.001). In psychological aspects, the
subjects had worries about life, depression, and difficulties with family.
They felt depressed because they couldn't see their children often and felt
lonely. However, people who had religious beliefs were shown to be more
stable and happier. They reported that their religion helped them meet new
people and have good fellowships. In dietary practices, 80% of the subjects
reported that they had breakfast and 75% reported that they had three
meals a day. The meals consisted of vegetables(62.5%), grains(58.9%),
meats(33.9%), and fried foods and milk were least consumed. Only 6.7% of
male subjects consumed milk everyday. The study has shown that gender,
alcohol consumption, marital status, prior diseases and habitual smoking
affect his/her healthy diet. In conclusion, family participation is
recommended in order to improve living quality of the elderly. A variety of
programs in order to improve their mental health as well as change to
have healthy lifestyle and dietary habits of the elderly should be needed.
