국문 초록

폴란드 낭만주의 문학을 대표하는 아담 미츠키에비츠의 <판 타데우시>는 그의 최대 걸작으로 평가 받고 있다. 12 책으로 구성된 운문 소설인 <판 타데우시>는 붕괴 직전의 폴란드 귀족사회를 배경으로 하고 있으며, 등장인물들의 운명에 당시 일어났던 폴란드 역사상 중요한 사건들이 커다란 영향을 미치고 있다. <판 타데우시>의 핵심 인물인 야첵 소플리차는 명예(honor), 조국(ojczyzna), 신(Bóg)을 최고의 가치로 여기는 전통적인 폴란드 귀족사회의 전형적인 인물이다. 그는 칼로써 자신의 주장을 관철시키려고 하는 사르마타(sarmata) 귀족의 자유분방하고 자존심이 강한 청년이었다. 그가 평소 절친한 친구처럼 지내던 대 귀족 스톨르닉 호레스코의 딸 에바와 서로 사랑하는 사이가 된다. 에바는 이 사실을 집안에서 숨기고 있었으나 누구나 알고 있었다. 스톨르닉은 두 사람의 관계를 눈치 채고 있으면서도 끝까지 무시하고 야첵에게 교활한 방법으로 거절의 뜻을 전한다. 분노한 야첵은 스톨르닉을 사살한다. 이 사건이 공교롭게 러시아 군인들이 호레스코 성을 공격할 때 일어났기 때문에 야첵은 민족 반역자로 알려진다. 이 시기는 폴란드 귀족들이 러시아와 공모하여 국가반역을 도모했던 타르고비차 동맹세력들이 권력을 장악하고 있던 시기였다. 야첵에게 살해된 스톨르닉은 애국자로 알려져 있어서 야첵은 이중으로 민족을 배신한 것으로 낙인 찍힌다. 야첵의 아들 타데우시와 스톨르닉의 손녀 조시아의 순수한 사랑은 타데우시가 연상의 러시아 상류사회 사교계 마담 텔리메나와 로맨스를 가졌던 일로 인해서 위기를 맞는다. 타데우시와 조시아의 관계를 아는 텔리메나는 타데우시가 자기의 사랑을 배신했다고 비난한다. 이 논문에서는 타르고비차, 스톨르닉, 야첵, 타데우시에 의해서 행해진 네 가지 경우 배신의 문제를 다루고 있다

영문 초록

Adam Mickiewicz (1798-1855) was born in Lithuania and attended Wilno University, where he studied science, literature and classical philology under the eminent professors Jan Śniadecki, Joachim Lelewel, Ernest Groddeck, and Leon Borowski. In 1822, Mickiewicz published Ballads and Romances, which marked the beginning of Romanticism of Polish literature. Among others, he wrote Konrad Wallenrod (1828), Forefathers' Eve (1832), and Books of the Polish nation and of the Polish Pilgrimage (1832). He taught Latin literature at College in Lausanne (1839-1840) and became the first chair of the Slavic literature department at College de France in Paris (1840-1844). Mickiewicz's epic Pan Tadeusz consists of twelve books that show the last period of the Polish gentry society when the Napoleonic expedition against Moscow began. Jacek Soplica, a noble young man, loves Eva, the aristocrat daughter of Stolnik Horeszko. An occasion arises, where Jacek helps Stolnik, and Stolnik announces at reception parties that Jacek is his best friend. Also, Stolnik often invites Jacek to his castle and lets Jacek stay for a long time. Naturally, Jacek believes that Stolnik would approve, if he were to propose to Eva. However, despite the fact that Stolnik knew that Jacek and Eva love each other, he ignores it and marries Eva off to another aristocrat. This paper analyzes four cases of betrayal in Pan Tadeusz: There are examples of traitors to Poland in Confederation of Targowica and Jacek Soplica; the abuse of a friend's trust in Stolnik Horeszko; and finally the deception of love in Tadeusz. The dramatic feud between two noble families begins with Stolnik's refusal of Jacek's proposal to his daughter Eva, which brings a lot of tragedies and pain to both families. Fortunately, however, through Jacek‘s several sacrificial heroic deeds, the conflict between the two families gets happily resolved in the end. After all, despite their differences and hatred for each other they both do feel strongly for their fatherland and value the significance of Poland's independence.
