개념 정의 분석을 통한 평생교육학과 사회교육학의 학문적 정체성 탐색

국문 초록

평생교육에 대한 관심의 증진에도 불구하고 평생교육학의 정체성에 대한 의문이 제기되고 있다. 이러한 정체성 혼란의 원인에는 ‘평생교육’ 개념의 모호성과 더불어 유관용어인 ‘사회교육’과의 복잡한 관계도 한 몫을 하고 있다. ‘평생교육학’이나 ‘사회교육학’의 학문적 정체성을 확립하기 위해서는 먼저 그 기초용어인 ‘평생교육’과 ‘사회교육’을 개념의 세 가지 정의방식인 기술적 정의, 조작적 정의, 강령적 정의로 분류한 후 각각의 학문적 성립 가능성을 검토해 보는 것이 필요하다. ‘평생교육’의 경우 세 가지 정의방식에 의한 개념 모두 독자적이고 차별화되며 객관적인 학문의 성립을 위한 기초로서 부적합한 것으로 분석된다. 한편, 학습의 관점에서 교육학을 재구성하려는 새로운 접근방식은 평생교육의 기술적 정의에 기초해 있으나 평생교육학과는 별개의 학문인 ‘평생학습학’으로 인식하는 것이 바람직하다. 또한 사회교육의 조작적 정의에 기초할 때 응용학문으로서의 ‘사회교육학’이 성립될 수 있으며, 구체적인 현장과 대상, 모학문적 관점에 의해 다양한 하위분야로 구분될 수 있다. 현재 ‘평생교육학’은 ‘평생교육’ 개념의 슬로건적 성격으로 인해 사실상 ‘평생학습학’과 ‘사회교육학’을 포괄하고 있기에 정체성 확립이 필요하다. 또한 진정한 ‘평생교육학’은 ‘학교교육’과 ‘사회교육’을 통합하기 위한 별개의 응용학문으로 인식하는 것이 바람직하며, 과거의 역사적 전통을 계승한 사회교육학의 회복과 발전도 요구된다.

영문 초록

In spite of specially increasing interest in lifelong education, there is also deep anxiety about identity crisis of the science of lifelong education. One essential cause of this crisis is the vagueness of the concept of 'lifelong education', and its complex relationship with the relevant concept of 'social education'. In order to establish the identities of the science of lifelong education and the science of social education, we must examine their basic concepts, i.e., 'lifelong education' and 'social education', with the criteria of three types of general definitions - descriptive definition, stipulative definition, and programmatic definition. In the case of 'lifelong education', it seems that all types of definitions are not suitable to establish independent, unique and objective science. And it is desirable that we designate the new theoretical approach which is trying to reconstruct educational logics in the view point of 'learning' as 'the science of lifelong learning'. And we can establish 'the science of social education' on the basis of stipulative definition of 'social education'. Also, we can devide it into many sub-areas according to specific fields, objects and viewpoints of various sciences in the background. The present science of lifelong education includes actually 'the science of lifelong learning' and 'the science of social education' together owing to its nature of slogan. So, we must discern between the two things, and it is desirable that we recognize the real 'science of lifelong education' as another specific applied science to integrate school education and social education.
