프랑스 중기 구석기시대 네안데르탈인의 주먹도끼 제작과 사용

국문 초록

이 글은 무엇보다 먼저 서유럽의 대표적인 중기 구석기유적 중에 하나인 라 끼나 유적(La Quina)의 6d층에서 출토된 석기들의 분석결과를 토대로 중기구석기시대를 살았던 마지막 네안데르 탈인들의 광물자원획득방식 및 주먹도끼 제작기술체계에서의 특성들을 드러내는데 일차적인 목적이 있다. 6d층의 석기갖춤새(ensemble lithique)의 가장 주요한 특징은 두 가지 작업연쇄가 공존되었다는 점으로, 즉 격지자체를 생산하는 작업연쇄와 주먹도끼를 제작하는 작업연쇄가 나란히 진행되었다. 한편 돌감의 획득과정이 즉흥적이거나 기회주의적이기보다는 매우 전략적이며 체계적이라는 점이다. 이는 기존의 네안데르탈인들의 생존활동이 기회주의이었다는 평가를 강하게 부정하는 증거로 볼 수 있다. 동시에 라 끼나유적과 그 주변의 다른 중기구석기유적들에 대한 최근의 연구결과들을 종합적으로 검토해보면 돌감의 이동 또는 순환양식은 점유집단의 생존전략과 계절적 이동성과 매우 밀접한 관련성이 있었던 것으로 추정된다. 라 끼나유적의 6d층 석기들은 기술-형식학적으로 MTA국면이라는 큰 틀을 벗어나진 않지만 도로도뉴의 MTA와는 다르다는 에서 지역적 특색을 찾을 수 있다. 이 층은 주먹도끼를 제작하고 유지하는 활동이 지배적이었던 층이지만 필요에 따라서는 긁개나 톱니날 등 그 밖의 석기를 제작하기도 하였는데, 이들 석기들은 각각 돌감의 경제성을 고려하여 선택적으로 제작되었던 것으로 파악된다. 이 층에서 출토된 세 점의 완형 주먹도끼는 다른 곳에서 생산되어 유적 내에서는 단지 사용되고 폐기되었던 반면에 유적 내에서 제작된 대량의 주먹도끼는 다른 곳으로 반출되었는데 아마도 도로도뉴 지방으로 남하되었을 것으로 추정된다. 이번 분석에서 살펴 본 것과 같이 사멸직전의 네안데르탈인들은 자신의 활동을 조직화하여 자신들을 둘러싼 불리한 환경조건들을 극복하기위해 치밀하게 전략적으로 사고하고 행동하였다. 이러한 행위의 조직화는 이들이 미래에 발생할 사건에 대해서 예지력이 없었다면 이루어질 수 없었을 것이다. 이러한 맥락에서 마지막 네안데르탈인들은 현생인류에 못지않은 지적 능력을 보유하고 있었으며 그들의 사멸원인을 두 인종간의 지적능력 차이에서 찾으려는 시도는 지양되어야 할 것으로 생각된다.

영문 초록

The foremost object of this article is to clarify traits in mineral acquisition strategy and technological system of hand-axe production of Neanderthals-the last residents of middle Paleolithic-based on analysis of assemblages from layer 6d layer, La Quina site showing uniqueness of middle Paleolithic in western Europe. The most significant trait in lithic assemblage of 6d layer is the existence of connection between different manufacturing processes(. Namely, process for taking flakes from core stone and process for manufacturing hand-axes took place simultaneously. Besides, the course of acquiring stone material was very systemic and strategic rather than spontaneous or opportunistic. These can be considered a proof strongly denying established argument that activities for life by Neanderthals were largely dependent on environment itself. Moreover, closely reviewing the recent studies about La Quina site along with other neighboring sites, it can presumed that transfer of stone materials or circulation of style were closely related to strategies for existence and seasonal migrations by residents of each site. In term of tech-typology, assemblages of stone tools from the 6d layer, La Quina did not diverged from formality of MTA, but regional traits can be identified in that they are different from the MTA of Dordogne region. Production and maintenance of hand-axes was central activities of this layer however, if needed, other tools like scrapers or denticulates were also manufactured. These stone tools are thought to be manufactured selectively considering economical efficiency of raw material. While three complete hand-axes from this layer were thought to be made in other places and were scarped after use within the site, a massive volume of stone tools produced in this site were taken out to other locations, presumably south-bound to Dordogne region. As shown in this analysis, on the brink of disappearance did Neanderthals think thoroughly and behave strategically, in order to overcome unfavorable environment, by organizing their behaviors. Without foresight, organizational behaviors might have not been accomplished. In this context, the last Neanderthals were believed to possess intellectual ability so much as Homo sapiens sapiens did. Accordingly, attempts that seek for cause of Neanderthals’ disappearance from the intellectual difference between two races (i.e between Neanderthals’ and Homo sapiens sapiens ’) should be sublated.
