국문 초록

미국에서 홈스쿨링 운동은 성공적인 사회적 운동의 하나로 손꼽힌다. 이는 개인적 차원의 노력과 사회적 환경이 변증법적으로 만들어 낸 결과로 이해할 수 있다. 이 논문은 미국의 홈스쿨링 운동의 사회적 배경 및 요인을 분석하였다. 먼저, 홈스쿨링 운동의 활성화는 중앙집권화와 관료제로 특징 지워지는 현대 주류문화와 제도에 대한 저항이 집단적으로 나타났기 때문에 가능하였다. 둘째, 홈스쿨링 운동의 배경에는 단순히 위험한 학교로부터 자녀를 보호하겠다는 생각 이상으로 아동의 자연 그대로의 순수함이 숭배의 대상이 되는 아동 숭배 사상이 자리 잡고 있다. 셋째, 홈스쿨링은 핵가족의 탄생과 함께 소위 ‘가족 가치’를 소중하게 여기고 그것을 자율적으로 실천하고자 하는 사람들이 선택해 온 운동이다. 끝으로, 정부가 주도한 도시 근교의 교외가 발달한 것도 자기 자녀를 집에서 직접 가르쳐야겠다는 학부모에게 홈스쿨링 하는데 필요한 물리적 조건을 충족시켜 주었다. 우리나라의 경우 홈스쿨링은 아직 사회적 운동으로서 크게 자라나지 못하고 있는 것은 위에서 살펴본 몇 가지 특성 측면에서 우리나라 사회가 미국 사회와 다르기 때문이라고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

Homeshooling movement in the United States has been recognized as one of the most successful social movements. It resulted from the dialectic combination of individuals' efforts and the social background. This paper tried to analyze the social background and elements influencing homeshooling movement in the States. First, rapid expansion of homeshoolers was closely related to the collective opposition to the main stream culture and system characterized by highly centralized and bureaucratized society. Second, homeshooling movement sprang out in the midst of the American cult of the child, which is one step further from the idea that parents want to protect their children from dangerous school. Third, homeschooling should be understood in terms of family values which was triggered by the emergence of nuclear family. Finally, homeschooling could happen because of suburbanization, which made it possible for the parents to homeschool their children by providing them with the physical space as well as the cultural atmosphere. That homeschooling in Korea is not yet activated enough to be legalized might be primarily due to the lack of commitment and efforts of individuals. However, it might be more closely linked to the fact that Korea is somewhat different from the Unites States in terms of social characteristics mentioned above.
