미국에서의 다문화교육과 국제이해교육과의 통합에 관한 연구

국문 초록

최근 우리나라에서는 다문화교육이 큰 주목을 받으면서 그동안 진행되어오던 기존의 국제이해교육과 어떤 관계에 있는지 혼란이 있어왔다. 현장의 교사들은 구체적 교육 실시 방법에 있어 차이점을 알고 싶어 했으며 학자들 사이에서도 상호 관계 정립에 대해 논의를 시작하였다. 본 논문은 미국의 사례를 중심으로 이 두 교육이 발생된 배경과 전개과정 갈등과 통합의 노력을 살펴봄으로써 우리나라의 다문화교육과 국제이해교육이 어떤 방향을 지향하는 것이 바람직한가에 대해 시사점을 얻고자 하였다. 미국에서의 다문화교육과 국제이해교육은 오랫동안 갈등과 반목관계를 유지하였으나 세계화가 급속히 진행되고 지역사회와 세계가 더욱 가까워지면서 90년대 이후 협력과 통합의 길을 모색해가고 있다. 이러한 통합의 사례를 교사교육 프로그램과 대학 교육과정을 중심으로 분석한 결과 통합의 교육방법으로 가장 많이 활용되고 있는 것은 지역의 다문화적 요소와 세계의 다양한 문화의 연결, 세계문제와 국내문제의 연계, 다양한 관점과 문화간 의사소통능력의 증진을 통한 통합 등이였고 이러한 학습은 학제적인 방법과 경험학습법을 통해 진행되고 있었다. 이러한 통합의 구체적 사례분석을 통해 발견된 가장 특징적인 측면은 두 교육을 서로 연계하였을 때 교육적인 시너지효과가 높게 나타나고 있다는 것이다. 따라서 한국에서의 국제이해교육과 다문화교육의 공동발전을 위해서는 다양한 통합방법을 활용한 교육과정과 프로그램의 개별이 중요하다고 할 수 있다. 이러한 논의를 근거로 통합프로그램 및 교육과정의 개발에 있어 관련 교수 및 학과의 유기적 관계 형성과 협력이 무엇보다 중요함을 강조하였고, 더 나아가 두 교육 연계의 구심점이 될 수 있는 대학 전체 차원의 협의기구 발족이 필요함을 제안하였다.

영문 초록

As multicultural education has received an increasing attention in Korea recently, educators have raised questions about the relationship between multicultural education and global/international education. Korean teachers want to know the differences in instructional methods between them, and Korean scholars also begin discussion on their conceptual relations. This study analyzed the origins, developmental processes, conflicts and connections of both educations in the US and tried to get some implications for the two educations in Korea. In the US, there has been tensions and conflicts for a long time between multicultural education and global/international education. Both areas, however, have started a dialogue since 1990s. According to the analyses of the collaborative programs of the two educations, the integrations are usually implemented through connecting US multi-cultures with the cultures in the world, linking local programs with global problems, addressing multiple perspectives, and cultivating intercultural communication skill. The integrative teachings are mostly provided through multidisciplinary or experiential pedagogy. The most important finding was that there were synergistic effect on both education when making connections between them. Based on the research findings, the importance of both developing integrative curricula or programs and cultivating a cooperative relationship was emphasized, and the establishment of campus-wide cooperative council involving professors and academic divisions interested in the teaching of cultural understanding was proposed for taking the central role in the collaboration of both educations.
