국문 초록

포스트모더니즘과 해체주의 그리고 지구공동체의 무한경쟁시대인 21세기는 ‘문화의 세기’요 ‘교육의 세기’가 될 전망이다. 이런 시대상황 속에서 나라가 바로 서려면 교육이 바로서야 하고, 교육이 바로 서려면 스승의 권위가 바로서고 제자의 자아실현이 최대한 보장되는 자유로운 교육풍토가 조성되어야 한다. 동서고금을 불문하고 권위 없는 교육이나 자유 없는 교육도 성공할 수 없음은 주지의 사실이다. 그런데 우리의 현실은 마치 권위 상실의 시대를 맞이한 것처럼 스승의 권위를 비롯하여 모든 권위가 걷잡을 수 없을 만큼 허물어지고 있는 실정이다. 사실상 조국의 선진화와 평화 통일을 창출해야 할 책무를 떠맡고 있는 우리 교육은 권위부재와 자유부재의 극한적 위기 상황 속으로 빠져들고 있다고 해도 과언이 아니다. 이런 문제의식 아래 스승의 권위를 되살리고 제자의 자아실현을 극대화 할 수 있는 자유로운 교육공동체 구축을 위한 방안 모색으로 ①교육에 있어서의 권위 ②교육에 있어서의 자유 ③권위와 자유의 상보적 관계 등 세 가지 측면에서 본 연구를 진행하였는데, 그 구체적 내용은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 권위 상실의 역사적 과정을 고찰하고 권위 회복의 필요성을 역설한 다음, 권위의 의미와 종류를 상술하고, 전문가 권위의 특성을 기술하였다. 둘째, 우리교육에 있어서 자유부재현상을 기술한 다음, 우리의 교육을 되살릴 수 있는 자유의 의미와 가치, 그리고 자유의 종류와 자유의 한계를 차례로 고찰하였다. 셋째, 교육에 있어서 권위와 자유의 관계는 상극의 배타적 관계가 아니라 상생의 상보적 관계이어야 한다는 원칙을 교육사상가들을 통하여 입증하였다.

영문 초록

It is the purpose of this study to clarify the significance and relationship of both authority and freedom in the context of modern schooling. There is no education without authority and there is no education without freedom. Authority has frequently been subject to challenge because we confuse it with authoritarianism which hampers freedom. Authority in general takes the form of a command, decision, or pronouncement but it does not rely on direct prescription. Authority which is a legitimate constraint invites voluntary obedience by appealing to public value system in directing various actions. Emphasizing authority alone inevitably leads to authoritarianism. On the other hand, freedom in education is the necessary condition for self-realization and happiness. If we seek to realize our own freedom, we should commit ourselves equally to the freedom of others. Authority and freedom are facets of the same environment. The one implies stability or permanence, the other makes growth or adjustment is new needs possible. In effect, authority stands for stability of social organization by means of which direction and support are given to individuals, while individual freedom stands for the forces by which change is intentionally brought about. Authority is not a concept contradictory with freedom, but nourishes, freedom under its protection. In fact, authority and freedom are complementary to each other. The educational task is the intimate and organic union of the two things: of authority and freedom. The idea of attaining a solution by separation instead of by union misleads and thwarts our endeavor whenever it is acted upon. In conclusion, I emphasize not only right understanding about the significance of authority and freedom but also the desirable harmony between authority and freedom.
