原州地域 朝鮮白磁의 生産과 供給

국문 초록

현재까지 원주지역에서 확인된 42개소의 조선시대 백자가마터(분청사기가마터 포함, 고려시대 자기가마터 8개소, 옹기가마 2개소 제외)는 사회적·정치적 중심지인 강원감영에 있었던 원주읍내에 공급하기 용이한 곳인 귀래면과, 경제적 중심지인 부론면과 문막읍, 강천면(현재 여주군에 편입)에 대부분 분포되어 있다. 원주지역에 이처럼 많은 수의 백자가마가 설치·운영될 수 있었던 요인으로는 중앙관요인 경기도 광주 분원에 공급할 정도의 양질의 태토를 보유하고 있었다는 점과 땔나무가 풍부하다는 점을 들 수 있다. 즉 이상의 요인은 원주지역에서 조선시대 전 시기에 걸쳐 가마가 운영될 수 있었던 밑바탕이 되기도 하였으며, 지표조사로 확인된 조선시대 백자가마터가 이를 뒷받침해주고 있다. 원주지역에서 확인된 백자가마터의 시기별, 읍·면별 분포현황 및 생산된 백자의 품질, 원주지역의 인구현황 등을 분석한 결과 몇 가지의 특징을 발견할 수 있다. 첫째, 원주지역 백자가마는 지표수습된 유물을 분석한 결과, 양질백자와 조질백자가 같이 확인되는 백자가마터와 양질백자만 확인되는 백자가마터, 조질백자만 확인되는 백자가마터로 구분할 수 있다. 이는 생산방식이 다른 백자가마가 모두 존재하였음을 의미하는 것으로 그 요인은 다양한 수요계층에서 비롯된다. 원주는 강원도의 정치적·문화적 중심지로 여타 지역보다 많은 인구가 밀집될 수 있는 여건이 마련되어 있었으며, 조선 후기에는 상업의 발달로 인해 섬강과 남한강 주변에 위치한 부론면과 문막읍·강천면에 다양한 계층이 거주할 수 있는 바탕이 되었다. 이러한 요인들로 인해 다양한 수요층을 대상으로 한 양질백자와 조질백자를 생산하는 가마를 운영할 수 있었던 것이다. 둘째, 원주지역 백자가마를 생산한 백자를 수요층에서 원활하게 공급할 수 있도록 인구가 밀집한 주변지역에 입지하였다. 이는 인구가 밀집한 원주읍내와 부론면과 문막읍, 강천면은 정치적·상업적 중심지로써 사람의 왕래가 잦았기 때문에 교통로가 발달한 데서 그 이유를 추정할 수 있다. 이러한 발달된 교통로를 중심으로 장시가 활성화되었기 때문에 원주지역에서 생산된 백자는 장시라는 공간에서 수요자에게 원활하게 공급될 수 있었다. 이것을 부론면과 문막읍, 강천면, 귀래면에서 조선시대 전 시기에 걸쳐 백자가마의 운영이 가능했던 이유이다. 셋째, 원주지역의 조선시대 백자가마의 운영은 대규모가 아닌 독립적인 소규모생산체제로 설치·운영되었던 것으로 판단되며 이러한 점은 공급과 밀접한 관련이 있는 것으로 판단된다. 그 근거로는 원주지역에서 확인된 42개소의 조선시대 백자가마터 중 귀래1리에 5개소, 손곡3리에 2개소, 손곡2리에 4개소, 단강리에 3개소가 근접거리에 시기를 달리하는 백자가마터가 분포하고 있는 양상을 통해 추정할 수 있다.

영문 초록

A total of 44 White Porcelain Kiln Sites confirmed in Wonju are distributed throughout around the town of Wonju was the social, political center and Puron-myon, Munmak-up and Kangchen-myon were the center of economy. The main reasons many of Kilns could be installed and managed in Wonju are possession of good qualified white clay enough to supply to Central Government Kiln in Gwangju, Kyunggido and the abundance of firewood. Also this main reason would be the foundation that could be managed the Kiln during the whole period of Joseon in Wonju. There are some of the features as the results of analysis of distribution data that is confirmed in Wonju, quality of white porcelain, population data confirmed in Wonju. First, it is confirmed White Porcelain Kilns in Wonju produced superior quality white porcelain with low quality : or good and low quality white porcelain kilns are separated. It is the condition that Wonju would be a densely populated district as the political and cultural center of Kangwondo as compared with other area. In the late period of Joseon, It caused people of every class could resided in Puron-myon, Munmak-up and Kangchen-myon were located around SeomRiver and NamhanRiver. In other words, the residence of various demand classes caused management of Kiln produced good and poor quality White Porcelain. Second, White Porcelain Kilns were located in a densely populated district for effective supplying of White Porcelain to the demand class. The traffic route was developed in the town of Wonju, Puron-myon, Munmak-up and Kangchen-myon were the areas of frequent comings and goings as the political and commercial center. Because of the markets was reinvigorated on the well-developed traffic route, White Porcelain produced in Wonju well supplid to the consumers in the market. This is the reason why the management of White Porcelain Kiln in Wonju was not a large scale but an independent small scale production system. It is closely connected with supply. It is confirmed by the aspects of White Porcelain Kiln Sites that has different periods with Among the 44 Joseon White Porcelain Kiln Sites confirmed in Wonju, 5 Kilns in Gyrael-ri, 2 Kilns in Songok3-ri, 4 Kilns in Songok2-ri, 3 Kilns in Dankang-ri There are White Porcelain Kiln Sites have different periods around close district. Above all, not body and firewood but the aspects of production, supply and demand had a significant impact on the location of Joseon White Porcelain Kiln.
