아난의 출가문제 고찰

국문 초록

아난은 붓다의 수제자인 사리불과 더불어 초기불교에서 가장 중요한 인물이다. 그런데도 아난의 출가와 관련된 기록에는 몇 가지 문제가 살펴지고 있어 주의가 요구된다. 아난의 출가와 관련하여 살펴보아야 할 문제에는 붓다의 카필라 귀향 때의 ① 석가족 집단 出家時에 아난이 함께 출가하고 있음에도 아난의 화상이 유독 다르게 상정되고 있다는 점, ② 아난이 붓다의 直弟子가 아닌 再傳弟子일 가능성에 관한 점, ③ 아난의 화상으로서 개연성이 높은 인물에 관한 점이 있다. 아난이 초기불교에서 가장 영향력 있는 인물임에도 불구하고 출가에 관한 기록에 문제가 있다는 것은 아난의 출가 기록에 특수한 상황이 작용하고 있다는 것을 의미한다. 본고에서는 이러한 특수성의 원인을 먼저 형인 제바달다의 부정적인 이미지에 의한 악영향의 관점에서 검토하여 그 타당성을 모색해 본 후, 아난의 상대적으로 어린 나이에 의한 측면을 검토해 보고자 하였다. 그리고 이와 같은 접근에서 아난관련 기록들에서 나타나 보이는 왜곡양상을 활용하여 그 타당성이 확보될 수 있도록 시도하였다. 아난의 출가와 관련된 기록의 특수성은 아난이 붓다의 재전제자이면서도 초기교단에서 막대한 영향력을 행사하는 중요한 위치를 점하고 있었기 때문이라고 할 수가 있다. 아난이 붓다의 직제자가 아닌 재전제가가 되는 것은 붓다 당시의 유연하고 폭넓은 사승관계에 기초하여, 아난이 상대적으로 어린 나이에 출가하는 양상에서 기인하는 것이다. 그리고 아난의 화상과 관련해서는 총4인이 기록되어 있지만, 이중 가장 개연성이 높게 상정되는 것은 十力迦葉이라고 할 수가 있다. 이는 십력가섭이 5비구 중의 한 명으로 석가족의 귀족 출신이자 인격이 훌륭하다는 점에서 타당한 설득력을 확보한다고 하겠다. 즉, 아난의 출가에서 보이는 특수성은 단순한 기록상의 혼란이 아니라, 역사적인 상황이 반영된 것으로서 사실을 변형시키려는 이해관계자들이 영향을 미치면서 나타난 왜곡상이라고 할 수가 있는 것이다.

영문 초록

Along with Śāriputra who was the leading disciple of Buddha, Ānanda is the most important figure in early Buddhism. Despite this, in the record related with Ānanda’s pravrajyā there are some problems that can be reckoned as Ānanda’s own peculiarity. The problems related with Ānanda’s pravrajyā are as follows: ① Despite Ānanda having left his family with others when there was the group pravrajyā of the Sakya tribe during Buddha’s visit home to Kapila-vastu, Ānanda’s upādhyāya was mentioned as peculiarly different. ② There is a possibility that Ānanda was not Buddha’s direct disciple but his secondgeneration disciple. ③ It is necessary to search who was the most plausible as Ānanda’s upādhyāya. The fact that, even though Ānanda was one of the most influential persons in early Buddhism, there is confusion in these basic records means that some special factor is working in the Ānanda’s pravrajyā. In this paper, the cause of this speciality is first reviewed in relation with the bad effect by the negative image of Devadatta, his elder brother and its validity is searched. Then, this paper deals with the aspect that Ānanda was relatively young at that time. In this approach, by using the distorted tendency that can be found in the Ānanda-related records, it was tried to establish the validity. The special feature related with Ānanda’s pravrajyā can be said to have been caused by the fact that Ānanda, even if he was a second-generation disciple, achieved a very important position, and exerted a huge influence in the early Buddhist sect. Ānanda’s position as a secondary disciple rather than a direct disciple is inferred from the fact that there was a flexible and wide mentor-monk relationship during Buddha’s time and Ānanda left his family at a relatively young age. In relation with Ānanda’s upādhyāya, 4 persons were recorded in total. Among them, the most probable one is Daśabala-kāśyapa, who acquires the plausible persuasion in that Daśabala-kāśyapa was one of 5 monks, a noble one from the Sakya tribe, and had respectful characteristics. That is, the special feature in Ānanda’s pravrajyā can be said that it was not just a simple confusion of record but a distortion which appeared while the concerned parties who wanted to change the historical aspects had influence on the historical facts.
