국문 초록

본 논문은 한국 금융시스템의 태동기에서부터 최근까지의 주요 발전과 역사적 변천에 대해서 기술하고 있다. 한국금융시스템은 특히 1997년 말에 발생한 외환위기 이후에 한국의 금융구조조정을 거치면서 엄청난 변화가 있었다. 본 논문은 금융시스템의 두 축인 금융기관과 금융시장을 중심으로 한국의 금융시스템을 조명하고 있다. 외환위기의 여파로 많은 금융기관 및 기업들이 퇴출되었으며, 이로 인한 기업의 투자활동위축과 내부자금의 사용으로 외부자금조달규모는 감소하였다. 기업의 외부자금조달은 은행의 차입에 비해 증권발행의 직접금융의 비중이 중대되어왔다. 자본시장이 급속히 팽창함에 따라 국내 금융시장은 기업의 자본조달수단으로서 점차 중요한 역할을 수행하고 있다. 특히 2009년 2월 4일자로 시행된 자본시장통합법으로 기업의 자본시장을 이용한 직접금융이 확대될 것으로 보인다. 최근 많은 국가들이 그러하듯이 한국의 금융도 전통적인 은행중심의 시스템에서 시장중심의 시스템으로 변화를 하고 있다고 하겠다.

영문 초록

This paper examines the major development and historical changes of the Korean financial system over a period from its initial stage to the most recent time. Korea's financial system especially showed radical changes in the process of the country's financial restructuring following the devastating financial crisis which broke out in late 1997. Financial institutions and financial markets, two key poles in financial system, are discussed in detail. In the wake of the crisis, a large number of financial institutions and firms went bankrupt and corporate external financing dwindled due to the sluggish investment and the use of internal financing for their investment. Their external fund has been more financed directly from the markets vis-avis indirect financing through bank loans. Financial markets have played an increasingly important role in the fund procurement in the corporate sector, and even more so in the future with the implementation of the 'Capital Market Consolidation Act' which came into effect on February 4, 2009. Korea's financial system, which the government traditionally implemented extensive controls, has been moving towards the market-based system since the outbreak of the 1997 financial crisis.
