해외직접투자의 경제적 효과 분석

국문 초록

  본 연구는 전자산업과 자동차산업 해외투자기업 454사의 2000-2006년간 패널자료를 이용하여 해외직접투자가 본국 무역에 미치는 경제적 효과를 분석하였다. 분석결과 첫째, 해외투자가 본국 무역에 미치는 효과는 최종재 수출대체효과, 중간재 수출유발효과, 역수입효과로 구성되며, 이 세 효과가 작용한 결과 무역수지가 개선되고 있음을 밝혔다. 둘째, 무역수지개선 효과를 유발한 요인이 선도기업과 추종기업이 다른데, 선도기업은 수요보완성과 생산보완성에 따른 최종재와 중간재 수출증가, 추종기업은 선도기업과의 생산보완성에 따른 중간재 수출 증가에서 비롯된 것으로 분석되었다. 셋째 FDI의 무역수지개선효과는 투자기간이 경과함에 따라 감소하는데, 전자산업에서는 현지부품조달 확대에 따른 중간재 수출감소, 자동차산업에서는 현지생산 부품의 국내 역수입 증가 때문인 것으로 분석되었다. 그리고 동반진출기업의 역수입이 매우 빠르게 늘어나는 것으로 나타났다.
  전자산업과 자동차산업 FDI의 무역수지개선효과는 중간재 수출유발효과에 따른 것인데, 현재와 같은 중간재 현지조달과 역수입 증가 추세가 계속된다면 무역수지개선효과가 감소하면서 제조업 공동화 현상이 나타날 것으로 추정되었다. 이로부터 제조업 공동화에 대응하기 위해서는 부품소재산업의 고부가가치화를 위한 구조조정을 서둘러야 한다는 정책적 시사점을 얻고있다.

영문 초록

  This paper investigates the influence of offshore production by Korean electronic and automobile firms on the firm trade balance and domestic production. I used a panel dataset containing 7 years" of data on 454 Korean manufactures and 1,096 overseas production affiliates to analysis the effect of direct investment abroad on exports and imports.
  Firms who increased their manufacturing investment overseas also tends to increase exports and imports. The relationship, however, varies across firms. Leading firms were able to expand both final and intermediary goods export. Subcontractor firms export intermediary goods more by supplying the manufacturing plants of their parent firms, but export final goods less. Those firms that are unlikely to supply to the manufacturing plants of their parent firms expand import from foreign affiliates.
  I also find that foreign affiliate productions in low-income countries raise both domestic exports and imports. The positive effect of FDI on intra-firm trade, however, diminishes as investment shifts towards high-income countries, such as EU and North America. The positive effect of FDI on trade balance diminishes as the years of operating experience increase. It shows the possibilities that foreign production and imports of goods from foreign affiliates displace domestic production.
