The purpose of the article is to make clear the concept of interest in terms of the whole ideal of living which is involved in Dewey"s concept of "an" experience, and to derive its educative meaning. According to etymology, interest is a compound word, "inter"(between) and "esse"(be), by which it means "to be between". With respect to interest as "to be between", the main question can be raised as to "what is indeed "to be between" and what is the nature of "to be between"?" To be between basically means something which exists between a person and his environment. In this respect, interest does not indicate the purely psychological dimension, but the state of psychology which is inseparable connected with things in his environment.
When a person is possessed of interest in the beginning stage of an experience, his interest is involved with an end(-in-view). In an experience, interest occurs when one foresees and wants a desirable result in mind. Interest can be seen as bringing out an will and enthusiasm to go toward the end, and play an important and decisive role in the guidance of an experience to the foreseen and wanted result. To be interested in an end is to be actively concerned with means which is the only vehicle to reaching a desired end. By being possessed of interest, we are literally able to perceive the relationship between a person and a situation, and between a person and objects. We take some objects or ideas, not because of objects itself or its intrinsic value, but because of their necessity for the maintenance of a selfinitiated activity. In an experience, one"s interest reflects his whole ideal of living. It develops into the whole ideal in the consummatory stage of experience; and the latter constitutes the major part of one"s interest and end.
In conclusion, interest does not referred to a psychological state independent of objects, and not to a mere instantaneous liking or a pleasant and agreeable state of psychology. Rather, it refers to a medium which makes it possible for a person and the world to meet and so to be connected, interrelated, and interdependent; and to a psychological tendency which emanates from the interconnection of the two. In this sense interest can be more exactly interpreted in Korean language not 흥미 but 관심(concern). Concern is a concrete and practical word of expressing interest in the mind; an affair of concern means to be important and beneficial to a concerned person. Therefore interest as concern is very congruous with end. Interest as end can be properly grasped as a connecting medium between a beginning and a final stages of experience and between process and result. Also, it should be understood not to be limited to a present experience, but to preserve continuity among subsequent experiences by the whole ideal of living.
