영문 초록
This year is the centennial of the Great Revival of 1907 in Pyeongyang to Korean Protestant Church. The Revival influenced not only Pyeongyang but also all over the Korean Peninsula and China, and it had a tremendous impact especially to the education field. That impact, however, had never been evaluated by historians of education. On the other hand, there were few researches on it and they dealt the issue mostly from theological standpoint. Therefore, they were insufficient in examining the correlation between the Revival and education. This research accordingly set the initial goal at clarifying the correlation between Pyeongyang Revival and education.
For this, I first presented political, economical, social, and religious backgrounds that influenced the Revival. And then I tried to not only introduce the direct origin and process of the Revival but also define the character of it. Its characteristics are as follows:
First, it is purely a spiritual awakening. Second, it remarkably showed its educational purpose; namely, it is composed of the spirituality education centered on repentance movement and the Bible education laying stress on the Bible Class. Third, it revealed a character of social reform. In other words, let alone the individual sanctification, spiritual awakening was expanded to social purification through education.
In the process, the Revival had influence on social education field. I will list several important examples among them. Those are inspiration of national and historical consciousness, radical growth of establishing Christian schools, popularization of Hangeul and elimination of illiteracy, women education and expansion of the rights of women, and moral enlightenment. Therefore, the Revival was far beyond the influence over the Christianity itself, and it seemed to have a strong effect on the whole social education then. Conclusively, the Revival was surely the educational reformation resulting in the“Renaissance of Education”in Korea as well as pure spiritual awakening movement.
