국문 초록

  뒤르케임은 사회의 통합이 감소함에 따라 그 사회의 자살율은 증가한다고 주장하였다. 그는 정치적 사회의 영역에도 이러한 원칙이 적용된다고 보고, 선거, 혁명, 쿠데타, 전쟁, 폭동 등과 같은 정치적 사건은 그 사회의 통합을 증가시키기 때문에 일탈의 발생이 억제된다고 주장하였다. 이 연구는 1992년 미국 LA지역에서의 폭동이 그 지역 이웃공동체들의 자살율과 살인율에 미친 영향에 대한 분석을 통해서 이러한 뒤르케임의 가설을 검증해보았다. 그리고 뒤르케임의 이론을 토대로 한 대표적인 범죄학 이론인 사회 해체이론에 근거한 가설들도 추가적으로 검증하였다. 자살이나 살인과 같이 드물게 발생하는 사건을 종속변인으로 할 때, 그리고 특히 상대적으로 작은 지역을 분석단위로 할 때, 일반적으로 사용되는 OLS 회귀모형은 분석에 적합하지 않다. 이러한 방법론적 문제를 논의하고, 일련의 대안적 회귀 모형들과 포와송 회귀모형, 그리고 음이항 회귀모형을 사용하여 자료를 분석하였다. 모형 간의 분석결과 차이를 논의하고, 가장 적합한 분석모형인 음이항 회귀분석을 토대로 분석결과를 논의하였다. 분석 결과 폭동은 자살율에 영향이 없었던 반면, 살인율은 오히려 증가시키는 것으로 나타나 뒤르 케임의 가설은 지지되지 못했다. 사회해체이론에서 유추되는 구조적 변인들의 경우 일부 효과가 발견되었다.

영문 초록

  This paper tests Durkheim"s argument that suicide rates decrease as the integration of political societies increases. According to Durkheim, political incidents such as elections, revolutions, coups, wars, and riots deter deviant behaviors because they increase social integration. To test this hypothesis, this paper analyzes the effect of the 1992 L.A. riot on suicide rates and homicide rates in L.A. areas at the neighborhood level. In addition, the hypotheses based on social disorganization theory are tested as well. When the rare events such as suicide and homicide are dependent variables, and when the level of analysis is a relatively small unit, such data are ill-suited to ordinary least square regression analysis. This paper discusses methodological issues on the choices of regression models and analyzes the data using different types of regression models, including negative binomial regression which is an appropriate model for the data. After the results from different regression models are compared, the findings from binomial regression model are reported. The findings show that the riot has no effect on suicide rates and, contrary to the hypothesis, it has a positive effect on homicide rates. While the results fail to support Durkheim"s hypotheses, they show some effects of social disorganization variables.
