  Many scholars of Deep Ecology(深層生態學) claim that the fundamental cause of the contemporary ecological crisis is derived from too much human-centered thought. However, their claims make the situation all the more difficult because of their insistence on too comprehensive way of thinking approach and the principles of practice. Scholars of Social Ecology(社會生態學) insist that all ecological crisis comes from social hierarchy. However, it is a mistaken view that any social phenomenon is the result of one main cause. Each phenomenon is the result of inter-related complex factors. So the dissolution of social hierarchy cannot be the only alternative to the solution of ecological crisis. Eco-feminists trace the cause of all ecological crisis to patriarchal male chauvinism. Henceforth, eco-feminists think like that they are exempted from the responsibilities for the current ecological problems. They also have very simple ideas that if male-centered social hierarchy is dissolved, the contemporary ecological crisis will be automatically settled. The Sutra on the Great Extinction(大般涅槃經) teaches us that the joy and sorrow of human beings consist of compound causes, do not comes from single factor. So we have to approach all problems in diverse perspectives. Accordingly, we have to approach the current ecological problems in this respect. As collective karma(共業) is the result of all collective social actions, especially it should be interpreted in terms of contemporary socio-cultural aspects and the current thought of the times. Therefore I"ve tried to reinterpret the ecological problems in terms of Karma thought. The root cause of ecological crisis is the Three Poisons(三毒), i.e "desire, anger and ignorance". Especially "ignorance(癡) is the most fundamental cause of the problems. However, it"s not easy to get rid of these "three poisons". So we have to change our daily life pattern and the way of thinking. If we think in the perspective of karma, all living beings of past, present and future are inter-related and on the same contexts in terms of samsara. Accordingly we need the introduction of "karma thought" in order to solve the current ecological crisis "Thought of karma(業思想)‘ teaches us that someday we"ll have karmic results although we do not have immediate results of what we have done. Furthermore, it also teaches us that we"ll have karmic result of what we have done to nature. The diversity of eco-system is maintained through the existence of various species of animals and plants. In order to prevent the extinction of each species, both motive and result of karma are important. Likewise both individual and collective karma should be taken into account in order to solve the current ecological problems.
