국문 초록

  본 논문은 필리핀 네그로스(Negros) 지역의 공정무역이 공정무역에 참여하고 있는 농민들의 삶에 가져오고 있는 변화와 이 변화가 여성에게 미치고 있는 영향에 대해 연구하고 있다. 우선 본론의 해석과 논의에 들어가기에 앞서 2장에서는 세계 공정무역의 현황, 3장에서는 네그로스 지역의 특성을 개괄적으로 살펴봄으로써 본론의 해석과 논의의 이해를 돕고자 한다. 이러한 이해를 바탕으로 4장에서는 공정무역이 현지민에게 가져오고 있는 변화를 지역적ㆍ지구적 맥락을 통합적ㆍ균형적으로 고려하면서 살펴보고 있다. 이 장에서는 현지 조사에서 관찰한 현지민의 삶의 변화를 아시엔다(hacienda)의 일일 노동자에서 농민으로의 지위 변화, 종속적인 일일 농업 노동자에서 연대적 관계형성의 주체로의 변화를 중심으로 기술하고 있다. 다음 5장에서는 이 같은 변화가 생명여성주의적으로 함의하는 바에 대해 보다 적극적인 해석을 시도하고 있다. 함의는 젠더와 공정무역, 빈곤의 관계, 지속가능한 삶의 양식을 만들어 가는 주체로서의 여성을 중심으로 사유되고 있다. 남겨진 과제로는 공정무역과 여성의 지위 변화와의 관계를 다루고 있다.

영문 초록

  This paper explores experiences of the women farmers in Negros Island in the Philippines and women activists of Negros, Japan and Korea, who are involved in fair trade. The changes in their lives brought by their participation in fair trade and how these changes influence the lives of the women in the area are investigated. Chapter 2 deals with the current situation of the world fair trade movement. The characteristics of the Negros area are reviewed in Chapter 3. Chapter 4 builds upon these previous chapters and looks into the changes that the fair trade movement brought to the local people, especially women. Such changes are examined in both local and global contexts in as comprehensive and as balanced ways as possible. This paper centers on two main changes: the change in social status from that of a day laborer of a hacienda to that of a farmer, and from that of a subordinate wage earner to that of an independent partner in a joint venture that is fair trade. In Chapter 5, an interpretation of the implications of such changes from eco-feminists’ perspectives is attempted. These implications are discussed focusing on gender, fair trade and poverty, the eco-(feminist) changes, women as actors building a sustainable mode of life and the issues of women’s status in fair trade.
