This paper has the aim to study Samuel Richardson’s Pamela to diagnose the social conflict of class and sex when marriage was set up in the 18 century’s British society. Pamela, an epistolary novel to confess a house servant, Pamela’s emotional overflowing and conflict about Mr.B, her master in the process of their marriage. Appealed by Pamela’s attractive and charmful feature, her master, Mr. B attempted to take her virtue with his sexual relationship. However, Pamela refused strongly, but still allured Mr. B to continue their love. Mr. B was finally led by Pamela’s love and virtue to marry her. Therefore a servant became a lady with the high social position and fortune when she married her master Mr. B. Mr. B tried to control her and raped her, but finally Pamela came to control Mr. B to get marry him with the consistency of virtue.
I pin down this social conflict of class and sex with marriage when studied Pamela, because in 18 C English woman’s property should belong to her husband and her social position is equal to her husband as soon as marriage set up. Therefore female desire for good marriage was strong in 18c British society. I conclude Richardson conveys in Pamela a female confession to promote the class ascension as well as fortune when she get married.
