영문 초록

  This study started with pointing out that the needs theory of social welfare formed a one-way paradigm by defining human needs in the negative aspects such as shortage or lack and assuming satisfaction of needs as the absolute condition to happiness. As a result, the needs theory of social welfare ignored the fact that human beings could feel happy depending on how they diffused their needs outward. In the study the emphasis was placed on the multidimensional approach to happiness through diverse reflections of human needs. The tools used were the Nobled Eightfold Path and the Six P？ramit？s, which made the practice principles of Thought of the Middle Way. The former can contribute to selective reduction of humans" selfish needs pursuing endless satisfaction, while the latter to selective expansion of their altruistic needs to devote themselves for others. Thus the limitations of the linear needs theory of social welfare insisting that "Fulfillment of needs means happiness" will be overcome. Furthermore, another potential role of Thought of the Middle Way in today"s Society can be found in its suggesting alternatives to preventing or solving the many different social pathologies caused by human fetishism and maximizing needs.
