‘시집살이’ 말하기에 나타난 균열된 여성 의식 - 시집살이 체험담과 시집살이 노래를 중심으로

국문 초록

  본 논문은 시집살이 체험담과 시집살이 노래를 비교, 대조함으로써 시집살이에 대해 말하는 여성 의식 속에 공존하는 가부장적 담론에 대한 저항과 수용(혹은 내면화)의 실체를 확인하고, 이러한 상반된 의식이 공존하는 균열 현상이 시집살이에 대한 말하기의 중요한 특징이라는 것을 입증하고자 하였다. 시집살이 체험담과 시집살이 노래는 말과 노래라는 장르적 차이를 갖지만, 시집살이 체험을 언표화하는 방식과 태도에 있어서는 공통점을 지닌다. 특히 주제적 표현의 반복, 타자적 수사 방식, 세계에 대한 화자의 갈등 의식 등 여성들이 시집살이라는 경험을 담론화하는 방식에서 그 유사점을 확인할 수 있었다.
  이러한 공통점에도 불구하고, 시집살이 노래의 화자는 딸이나 며느리의 정체성을 중심으로 말하지만, 시집살이 체험담은 어머니로서의 정체성을 중심으로 자기 과시적인 의식의 일면을 내보이는 차이를 보였다. 이는 여성이 시집살이 대해 말하는 행위를 통해 자기 존재를 표출하려는 욕망을 실현하고자 하는 의도를 지닌다고 할 수 있다. 또한 이러한 진술들은 여성 스스로가 내면화한 가부장적 규범의식에 의해 통제, 검열되면서 갈등과 저항, 수용과 강화라는 의식의 균열현상을 드러내는 것이라고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

  Sijipsali, the harsh life of daughters-in-law living with the husband’s family, symbolizes oppressed women’s life in patriarchal Korean society. Women have for a long time raised their voices about their Sijipsali through either personal Sijipsali Stories or Sijipsali Songs. However, they seem to express contradictory discourses. Their discourses encouraged both resistance against patriarchal structure and acceptance of the status quo. Through comparing women’s Sijipsali Songs with personal Sijipsali Stories, this study aims to prove that women have contradictory consciousness and that this contradiction is a crucial trait in women’s discourse. Both stories and songs have much in common in ways of verbalizing experiences and attitudes of dealing with life, though they belong to different genres; prose and poetry. In the late Chosun feudal Dynasty, the way women discoursed on their Sijipsali shows many similarities such as constant repetition of themes, narration through others (making travesty of one’s own sorrow), and inevitable conflicts between the self and the world. The narrators of Sijipsali Songs are usually identified as daughters or daughtersin-law, while the narrators of Sijipsali Stories are identified as mothers-in-laws. Consequently, it is noticeable that the narrators of stories often show self-pride and a conservative stance. Women seem to satisfy their desire to be recognized as a subject self through narration. However, women’s narrations reveal their limits. Women were also products of the time. They were educated and tamed by the main social discourse to support the discourse of the status quo. Consequently, they often censor themselves while they cry out for changes.
