미국 소재 주말 한글학교에서의 학습과 그 후 10년

국문 초록

본 연구는 미국 소재의 주말 학교에 다녔던 상이한 두 그룹에 있었던 학생들의 한국어 학습을 프로렙시스(prolepsis: 가상의 미래를 현실로 가져오는 것)라는 개념을 사용하여 부모의 생각과 아동의 언어발달 및 정체성 확립에 대하여 살펴보았다. 질적 방법을 사용하여 학교가 어떻게 부모의 생각을 대행하는지를 살펴보았다. 자녀의 미래가 한국에 있다고 생각하는 부모들은 아동이 나중에 한국에 귀국할 경우 학교에 잘 적응시키고자 하는 목적으로 한글학교에 보냈다. 반면에 자녀의 미래가 미국에 있다고 생각하는 부모들은 아동의 한글학습을 아동의 정체성과 연결시켰다. 주말 학교에 보내기 전의 두 그룹 아동의 가정에서의 언어 환경이 달랐고, 각기 독특한 언어 환경은 한글 학교에 오기 전 아동의 한국어 수준에 영향을 미쳤으며, 후에 주말 한글학교에서의 학급 선택에 영향을 미쳤다. 한글학교에서의 학습 이후 10년 후의 아동의 언어발달과 정체성에 관하여 살펴보았다.

영문 초록

Children in two groups at a Korean Saturday School in the U.S were investigated using the concept of “prolepsis”(i.e., bringing the imagined future into the present context). This longitudinal qualitative study describes how the parents' envisioned future for their children was related to the children's identity and their assumptions about how and what their children should learn. In addition, this study investigated how an institution mediated parental prolepsis by providing two idosyncratic groups of classes. Parents who envisioned that their children's future would be in Korea expected their children to prepare for the Korean school setting. Whereas the parents who expected that their children's future would be in the U.S. associated their children's language learning with maintaining their children's cultural identity. The two groups' home language learning environment also influenced the children's Korean language level that in turn influenced their placement at the Saturday school and what they learned at the school. In addition, retrospective interviews were conducted 10 years after the Saturday schooling to find out about the children's language development and the children's perceptions of their identity.
