영문 초록

In Sons and Lovers, Lawrence strikingly represents the dissociation of Paul's inferiority is split into the 'oedipal ego' compliant to his mother's will and the inner 'resistant ego' tormented with the intense rejection against his mother's possessive desire. The distorted love from Paul's mother prevents him from establishing normal self and accomplishing the independence of his real self. The conflict begins with the struggle between Paul's mother and father. It means the struggle between 'spiritual nature' of his mother and 'sensual nature' of his father. Because of the strang mother fixation and his oedipal love, he hates 'sensual nature' and his father also. He denies his own 'sensuality' and his. self-consciousness is split. More than that his distorted self shows a sort of neurotic attitude toward his father and other women. He both loves and hates his mother, from whom he really wants to accomplish his liberation out of her bondage. After all, he can accomplish his true release from all the restrictions and mother's bondage by mercy-killing. His mother's death establishes a rhetoric of paradox suited to this story about a release from the forces of bondage and a cure for the split of self-consciousness.
