국문 초록

이 논문은 선진국의 무역에서의 소득 및 가격탄력성을 측정함으로 무역량을 결정하는데 소득변화와 가격변화의 상대적 중요성에 대한 평가를 시도하려 한다. 이 연구는 특히 주요 선진 7개국의 무역행태에 대해 연구의 초점이 주어져 있다. 연구결과의 정책에 대한 함의는 명료하게 나타나고 있다. 무역에 대해 임금인상, 환율변화, 인플레이션 등의 가격변수의 중요성에 대한 지나친 강조는 한 국가의 구조적인 무역적자를 설명하는데 적절하지 못하다는 것이다. 오히려 비가격경쟁력의 무역에 대한 중요성에 주목해야 한다는 것으로 결론지어 진다.

영문 초록

This paper is to measure the relative significance of income change compared with price change in determining trade volumes in industrial countries by estimating their income and price elasticities in trade. It devotes attention to the trade behavior of seven major industrial countries. The policy implication of this estimation result is rather obvious. Asymmetrical emphasis on price variables such as wages growth, changes in exchange rates, relative inflation, etc. may not be appropriate in explaining persistent trade imbalance of a country. There should be more attention to non-price competitiveness.
