영문 초록

This paper is intended to investigate the characteristics of foreign direct investment(FDI) and to develop the FDI strategy of small and medium-sized companies located in Inchon, Korea. Based on the survey data by Inchon Chamber of Commerce & Industry, the current level of FDI to specific countries and industries is examined. This study also discusses motivations of overseas investment, ways of selecting host countries, obstacles of overseas investment both at host country and at home country. The level of strategy of Korean small and medium-sized companies on FDI is still at beginning stage and is lacking in global management perspective, especially compared to Japanese companies. To draw some meaningful managerial implications for FDI strategy, a case study is conducted on the overseas business activities of a company which has invested in China. The study aims to derive answers on the questions such as for the motivations, methods and successful results. We can conclude as follows. First, it is crucial to have strategic perspectives on global management for the investing company and at industry level, to establish inter-size network system(cooperation environment among companies with different size) for creating the mutual benefit in business activities such as sales, R&D and manufacturing parts and sets. Secondly, for the local government of home country, it is strongly recommended to establish information-sup-porting system to give small and medium-sized company useful overseas information for the foreign business opportunity, and to establish financial supporting system for the FDI of small and medium-sized companies.
