북한 사람에 대한 대학생과 일반인의 고정관념, 감정과 태도 : 외국인에 대한 태도와의 비교

국문 초록

본 연구에서는 두 개의 조사를 통해 우리 나라 사람들이 북한 사람에 대해 가지는 신념, 감정, 태도 및 행동 의사를 외국인 대상에 대한 반응과 비교하여 검토해 보았다. 연구 1에서는 대학생들이 북한 삶의 특징에 대해 지각하는 바를 자발적 반응과 형용사 목록을 통해 검토해 보았다. 연구 2에서는 남녀 대학생과 일반인들이 북한 사람에 대하여 가지는 신념, 감정, 태도 및 행동 의사를 포괄적으로 알아보았다. 그 결과, 대학생들은 일반인보다 북한 사람에 대해 보다 긍정적인 신념, 감정 및 호오도를 나타내어 10년 전의 조사(차재호, 1992) 결과와 비슷하게 나타났다. 대학생들은 북한 사람에 대해 미국 사람에 대해서보다 더 긍정적 감정 평가를 하였는데 반해, 일반인들은 이와 반대로 미국 사람에 대해서 북한 사람에 대해서보다 더 긍정적 감정 평가를 나타내었다. 그러나 여자 대학생들이 가지는 북한 사람에 대한 태도는 남학생에 있어서보다 덜 긍정적으로 나타났다. 일상 생활에서 의 중요한 대인관계 형성 의사에 있어서 대학생과 일반인의 차이가 없어지고, 또 여성이 남성보다 북한 사람에 대해 더 소원한 인간 관계 의사를 나타내었다. 또한 사람들이 북한과 통일에 대해 나타내는 태도는 북한 사람들에 대한 인지보다는 감정에 의해 보다 영향을 받았다. 이러한 연구 결과들의 중요한 실제적 의미와 이론적 의미에 대해 논의하였다.

영문 초록

In the present study, we conducted two survey research to investigate the stereotypes, affects and attitudes toward North Koreans in comparison with those toward other foreigners. Study I examined the stereotypes regarding North Koreans through open-ended questions and also by using an adjective checklist. Study 2 examined the stereotypes, affects and attitudes toward North Koreans and the responses were compared in terms of gender and status (i.e., college students or citizens) of the respondents. The results demonstrated that students had more favorable beliefs and affects toward North Koreans than citizens did, which was similar to the results found in Cha (]992). We also found that students had more favorable affects toward North Koreans than Americans, while the opposite was true for citizen respondents. However, female college students showed somewhat less favorable affects toward North Koreans than male students. This difference in affect between students and citizens disappeared when their intentions to have meaningful social relations with North Koreans were compared. We found instead that females were more reluctant than males to have meaningful relationships with North Koreans in everyday life situations. Finally, the attitudes toward North Korea and unification were more based on affects than beliefs regarding North Koreans. The practical and theoretical implications of these results were discussed.
