국문 초록

전통시대의 한국 지방행정구역 제도를 군현제라 부른다. 독특한 한국의 군현제는 역사적으로 지방호족의 활동과 계곡이 많은 지리적 조건에 영향을 받아 형성된 것으로 보인다. 경상도에서 군현의 형성과 발전은 이러한 한국 군현제의 특성을 잘 나타낸다. 신라는 정복활동을 통하여 점차적으로 한반도를 통일하고 집권적 군현제도를 실시하였다. 상주ㆍ양주ㆍ강주가 통일신라시대 경상도를 대표하는 수부 군현이다. 고려시대는 지방 호족의 강약에 따라 군현의 위계를 편성하였고, 안동 등 내륙 산읍이 고려시대부터 새로운 대읍으로 대두한다. 조선왕조는 대부분의 군현에 외관을 파견하고 읍치를 유교 이데올로기에 따라 정비정비하였다. 여전히 대읍은 많은 속현과 월경지를 거느리고 지방 세력의 강약에 따른 군현의 비합리적 위계가 존속하였다. 조선후기 교통과 상업의 발전은 경상도의 군현체제를 변화시켰다. 20세기이후 일제가 강제하는 지방행정구역 개편에 의하여 부산ㆍ마산 등 해읍이 주도하는 새로운 도시적 공간질서가 대두하였다.

영문 초록

The local administrative region system of traditional Korea is called Gun-Hyun system. It is believed that local powerful families and mountainous river valleys had historically influenced the unique characters of traditional local administrative region system, that is typically developed in Gyeongsang Province. Shilla Kingdom(52B.C.~A.D.935) progressively conquered the Korean Peninsula and practiced centralized local administrative region system. During the Unified Shilla Period(676~9l8), the prime local administrative center were SangjuㆍRyangjuㆍGangju(Jinju). The Koryo Kingdom(9l8~1392) organized hieratically local administrative region according to the strength of local powerful family. Hill side towns, such as Andong located in mountainous river valleys, appeared as new prime local administrative centers from the Koryo Period. The Chosen Kingdom(1392~1910) sought to establish centralized local administrative system by dispatching many local governors and constructing administrative towns in accordance with Confucian ideology. However during the Chosen period, the big local administrative regions preserved manny attached counties called ‘Sok-Hyun and enclaves by the irrational regional hierarchy according to local powerful families. In the late Chosen Period, the development of transportations and commercial activities brought about the changes of the local administrative region system by the growth of sea side towns in Gyeongsang Province. From the 20th, Japanese imperialists enforced revolutionary reformation of the local administrative region system. A new spatial organization has emerged by the leadership of the sea side towns such as Busan and Masan.
