국문 초록

이 글은 월천 조목의 사상적 연원을 검토하고, 그의 학문 경향과 성리 사상의 특징을 고찰하는 데에 목적이 있다. 필자는 우선 조목과 도학파학자들의 독서록에 있어서 공통적으로 『대학』이 중시된 사실을 주목하고, 이로부터 조목의 도학적 학문경향을 추론하였다. 그리고 조목의 학문형성에 있어서 퇴계 이황과의 관계를 敎學相長의 동반자적 관계로 이해하고, 조목이 퇴계학파의 발전에 기여한 점을 강조했다. 이 외에도 조목이 학문적으로 주세붕으로부터 상당한 영향을 받았다는 사실을 구체적으로 적시하였다. 조목의 학문적 경향에 있어서는 기본과 원칙을 중시하고, 학문적 순수성을 높이 평가했던 점을 부각시켰다. 구체적으로는 조목이 독서와 연구에서 문맥의 완벽한 이해를 목표로 했으며, 질박하고 진실한 성품을 바탕으로 일관된 삶을 추구했다는 점을 강조하였다. 그리고 『心經稟質』을 중심으로 하여 조목의 성리사상을 분석하였는데, 조목이 理氣性情에 대한 사변적 분석보다는 心學的 體認을 중시하였으며, 주희의 심성론을 철저히 따랐다는 점을 구체적으로 해명하였다. 그리고 조목이 陸王學 계열의 심학을 배격하고, 『心經』의 가르침을 통해 욕망을 줄여 虛明에 이르고자 하는 수양에 힘썼던 점을 드러냈다. 마지막으로, 조목이 임진란 당시 일본과의 강화론에 반대하고 복수의리론을 주장했던 배경 역시 주자학적 가치관의 영향으로 보아야 한다는 점을 주장하였다. 한 마디로 말하여, 이 글에서 필자는 도학적 실천과 正學的(理學的) 엄밀성을 동시에 추구한 성리학자로 조목을 평가하였다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to examine the academic origins of Jo Mok(趙穆), and to analyze his academic orientation and the characteristics of his Neo-Confucian philosophy. First, the author notes that the Dae-hak(大學) was highly valued in the reading records of both Jo Mok and scholars of the Dao Learning School(道學派), thereby inferring Jo Mok's academic tendency toward Dao Learning. Furthermore, the paper understands the relationship between Jo Mok and Yi Hwang(李滉) as a partnership of mutual enhancement and emphasizes Jo Mok's contribution to the development of the Toegye School. In addition, it specifically pointed out that Jo Mok was significantly influenced by Ju Sebung(周世鵬) in his academic pursuits. In terms of Jo Mok's academic orientation, he placed great importance on basic principles and valued academic purity. Specifically, the paper highlights that Jo Mok pursued a comprehensive understanding of context in his studies and research, and that he aimed for a consistent life grounded in an honest and genuine character. Jo Mok’s Neo-Confucian thought is analyzed with a focus on the "Sim-gyeong Pum-jil"(心經稟質), which reveals that he emphasized the introspective realization(體認) of the mind over speculative analyses of Li-Qi Xing-Qing(理氣 性情), and adhered strictly to Zhu Xi's theory of the mind and nature. The study further clarifies that Jo Mok rejected the Mind Learning(心學) of the Lu-Wang School(陸王學) and strove for self-cultivation through the teachings of the Sim-gyeong(心經) to reduce desires and reach a state of emptiness and clarity (虛明). Lastly, the author argues that Jo Mok's opposition to the peace negotiations with Japan during the Imjin War(壬辰亂) and his insistence on the principle of righteous revenge should be understood as rooted in the values of Zhu Xi's Neo-Confucianism. In short, this paper evaluates Jo Mok as a Neo-Confucian scholar who simultaneously pursued practical Dao Learning(道學) and the rigorous orthodoxy of Li Learning(理學).
