적석부 함몰양상으로 본 적석목곽묘의 목곽 높이

국문 초록

왕릉급 규모의 적석목곽묘인 황남대총 남분, 북분과 천마총은 목곽의 높이가 각각 370㎝, 400㎝, 210㎝로 보고되어 있다. 남분, 북분과 천마총의 목곽은 서로 2배 가까운 높이 차이가 있어 구조상 큰 차이를 보이지만, 남분, 북분의 목곽이 왜 높은지 또는 천마총의 목곽이 왜 낮은지 이유는 명쾌하게 해명되고 있지 않다. 이러한 상황에서 최근 조사·보고된 쪽샘 41호, 44호, 황남동 120호, 120-2호, 금령총 등 봉분 지름 25~30m에 해당하는 중형급 적석목곽묘의 목곽 높이가 모두 3m 이상으로 높게 추정되었다. 이뿐만 아니라 해당 고분들은 내부구조가 내외 이중의 목곽에 석단을 갖춘 것으로 추정되었는데, 이에 내부구조는 물론이고 목곽의 높이까지 모두 잘못 복원된것이라는 비판이 계속 제기되었다. 이에 본고에서 적석부와 함몰양상이 비교적 양호한 황남대총 남분 주·부곽, 북분, 천마총, 쪽샘 41호 주곽, 44호 등 5기 고분의 6개 목곽을 대상으로 보고된 목곽 높이의 추정 근거를 재검토하고, 함몰부의 체적과 깊이를 근거로 목곽의 높이를 새롭게 추정하였다. 그 결과, 황남대총 남분 주곽, 북분, 쪽샘 41호, 44호는 기보고된 목곽 높이와 크게 차이나지 않는 범위 내에서 새로운 목곽의 높이를 구할 수 있었고, 남분 부곽과 천마총은 보고된 목곽의 높이에 심각한 오류가 있음을 확인하였다. 남분 부곽과 천마총은 추정값보다 훨씬 낮게 목곽이 복원되어 있는데, 이러한 이유는 함몰양상의 차이에 따른 결과로 확인된다. 황남대총 남분, 북분, 천마총은 발굴 당시 목곽과 관련된 부식 목질이 처음 확인된 지점(높이)을 목곽의 최상단으로 판단하고 목곽의 높이를 추정하였다. 이에 따라 함몰이 목곽의 범위보다 넓게 일어난 남분 부곽과 천마총에서는 남분 주곽과 북분보다 훨씬 낮은 위치에서 목곽의 부식 목질 흔적이 확인되면서 목곽이 낮게 추정된 것이다. 함몰부의 체적과 깊이를 전혀 고려하지 않고, 부식 목질이 확인된 높이만을 기준으로 목곽의 높이를 잘못 추정한 것이 지금까지 이어져 온 것이다. 이에 남분 부곽의 높이는 기존 130㎝가 아닌 280~300㎝로 추정하였고, 천마총은 기존 210㎝가 아닌 350~410㎝로 새롭게 추정하였다. 결론적으로 현재까지의 분석결과, 중대형급 이상의 적석목곽묘는 모두 목곽의 높이가 3m 이상으로 높으며, 함몰양상으로 보아 내부는 이중곽과 석단시설을 갖춘 구조임이 확인된다.

영문 초록

This paper re-estimates the height of wooden chambers by examining the volume and depth of collapsed areas in five Silla tombs, including the main and subsidiary chambers of the southern tomb, the northern tomb of Hwangnamdaechong, Cheonmachong, and Jjoksaem Tombs No. 41 and 44, which have relatively well-preserved collapse patterns. The study found that for the main and subsidiary chambers of the southern tomb, the northern tomb of Hwangnamdaechong, and Jjoksaem Tombs No. 41 and 44, the newly estimated heights of the wooden chambers were within a similar range to the previously reported heights. However, significant discrepancies were identified in the reported heights for the southern tomb's artifact chamber and Cheonmachong. These chambers had been reconstructed at much lower heights than estimated, due to differences in collapse patterns. During the excavation of the southern and northern tombs of Hwangnamdaechong and Cheonmachong, the initial points where decayed wooden material related to the wooden chambers were observed were taken as the topmost points, leading to the height estimations. As a result, in the southern tomb's artifact chamber and Cheonmachong, where the collapse extended beyond the wooden chamber's boundaries, decayed wooden material was identified at much lower levels compared to the main chamber of the southern tomb and the northern tomb of Hwangnamdaechong, causing the wooden chambers to be underestimated in height. The continuous misestimation of the wooden chambers' heights was due to not considering the volume and depth of the collapsed areas and only relying on the height where decayed wooden material was found. Therefore, the height of the southern tomb's artifact chamber was newly estimated to be 280-300 cm instead of the previous 130 cm, and Cheonmachong was newly estimated to be 350-410 cm instead of the previous 210 cm. In conclusion, it is confirmed that all medium-to-large-scale wooden chamber tombs with stone mounds have wooden chambers with heights exceeding 3 meters, and the collapse patterns indicate that the interiors feature double-layered structures with stone platforms.
