다문화 학생의 교육 불평등: 부모의 사회경제적 배경이 다문화 학생과 비다문화 학생의 교육 격차에 미치는 영향

국문 초록

이 연구는 부산교육종단연구를 활용하여 다문화 초등학생과 비다문화 초등학생의 국어, 수학, 영어성취도가 차이를 보이는지 분석하는 데 목적이 있다. 다중회귀 분석 결과 다문화 초등학생과 비다문화 초등학생의 학업성취도 격차는 모든 과목에서 유의미하게 나타났으며, 그 격차는 약 0.4표준편차에서 0.6표준편차에 이르는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 다문화 학생과 비다문화 학생의 학업성취도 격차 요인을 분석한 결과 학생의 수업태도, 독서 시간을 비롯한 부모의 교육 지원이 다문화 학생과 비다문화 학생이 동일하다고 가정할 경우 학업성취도 격차는 약 60% 가까이 감소하는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 그러나 다문화 학생이 더 많은 독서 시간과 수업 태도를 개선하고 부모의 교육 지원이 동일하다고 가정할지라도 다문화 학생은 비다문화 학생에 비해 학업성취도가 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 최종 분석 모형에서 사회경제적 배경을 비롯한 가족 구성과 교육비를 투입한 결과 다문화 학생과 비다문화 학생의 학업성취도 격차는 사라지는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 다문화 학생과 비다문화 학생의 교육 불평등의 원인이 사회경제적 불평등에 기인한다는 사실을 실증적으로 보여주는 이 연구는 취약 계층의 교육 결과를 향상시키기 위해 보편적 복지의 확대가 요구된다는 점을 논의하고 있다.

영문 초록

Using Busan Educational Longitudinal Study(BELS), this study examines the achievement gap between immigrant and native students and determines whether socio-economic differences can explain such academic disparity. Out of the total sample of 3,107 elementary school students, 3.7%(115) were students from immigrant families, and 95.3%(2,992) percent were students from native families. The regression analysis revealed that 4th and 5th grade students from immigrant family were about 0.4 to 0.6 standard deviation behind across all subjects compared to native students. Even after assuming that students have the same approaches to learning, spend same hours in reading, and test anxiety level, including parental educational support, students from immigrant families appeared to demonstrate lower academic performance compared to native students. The achievement gap between these students has disappeared, however, once socioeconomic differences including educational expenditure, and family structure was taken into account. This study, which empirically confirmed that the causes of educational inequality between immigrant and native students are due to socioeconomic inequality, discusses the need to expand economic subsidy as a way to improve the educational results of children from socially disadvantaged families.
