국문 초록

혼이주여성들의 일상 경험이 자녀의 문화적 경험과 사회화 과정의 모태가 된다는 전제 하에 본 연구는 국제결혼가정 외국인 어머니의 자녀교육 관련 문화적 갈등과 대응방식을 중심으로 질적 연구를 진행하였다. 미시적인 수준에서 이 연구는 결혼이주여성들의 자녀양육 경험의 특수한 면모를 출신국별 문화적 배경에 따른 이주경험과 자녀교육관의 차이 위주로 살펴보기 위해 필리핀과 일본이 원국적인 두 어머니 집단의 경험을 교차시켜 분석해 보았다. 오랜 기간 동안 한국 사회 적응과정을 거치고 자신이 한국인임을 자부하는 필리핀인 결혼이주여성들의 경우 한국교육문화에 대해서는 거부감을 보이거나 무관심했으며 자녀들의 학교교육과 관련해서 학업성취 보다는 정서적 안정을 우선시했다. 반면에 일본국적을 유지하고 있는 일본인 결혼이주여성들은 자녀들을 한국의 교육환경에 온전하게 적응시키려는 강한 동화경향(同化傾向)을 보이며 이를 위한 지속적인 노력을 기울였다. 이는 결혼이주여성들의 한국사회에 대한 동화의 정도가 자녀 교육에 긍정적인 영향을 미칠 것이라는 막연한 선입견이 재고될 필요가 있음을 시사한다.

영문 초록

With the premise that the daily lives of the marriage-immigrant wives become the basis of their children's life experiences, this study focuses on the cultural issues and problems in their school-age children's education. We conducted long-term qualitative research on two groups, Filipinos and Japanese wives who have married Koreans and settled in Korea for at least seven years. The Filipino wives identified themselves as naturalized Korean citizens, but were very critical and skeptical of the ultra-competitive Korean education environment. This led to their general attitude of indifference and ineptitude in their children's education, reflecting their desire to raise them according to the ‘Filipino’ culture. Contrastingly, the Japanese wives identified themselves as Japanese citizens, but were actively involved in their children's education according to Korean school culture. Such findings goes against the premise of previous researches that accepted the notion that increase in familiarity with the host country's culture will enable the immigrant to better take advantage of educational opportunities for their offsprings. Instead, the implication of the research suggests that it is the view on nurturing and education philosophy they already carry with them that determine the perception and attitude in their upbringing of children.
