국문 초록

본 논문은 데카르트 철학에서 정치적 사유가 있는지, 있다면 어떤 위치를 차지하는지를 묻는다. 데카르트는 관대함의 덕을 자신의 윤리의 토대로 삼았다. 관대함은 자기의 자유의지에 대한 성찰에 기반한 자기 존중이다. 모든 사람이 자유의지를 갖고 있는 만큼, 자유의지에 기반한 자기 존중은 타인에 대한 존중 나아가 상호 존중으로 발전하게 된다. 본 논문에서 데카르트의 관대함과 사랑의 개념, 특히 우정의 개념을 연결함으로써 자기 존중이 인간 간의 상호 존중을 포함하고 있다는 것을 설명한다. 이러한 점과 관련하여 본 논문은 관대함이 시민의 덕임을 설명한다. 그렇지만 여기까지만 본다면, 데카르트의 정치학은 그의 윤리학과 다르지 않은 것처럼 보인다. 이와 관련하여 본 논문은 데카르트에게서 정치의 존재를 부정하는 궤낭시아의 해석을 살펴보고, 다음으로 데카르트에게서 정념의 정치의 가능성을 보는 콜레스닉앙트완의 해석을 살펴보고자 한다. 나아가 우리는 콜레스닉앙트완의 해석을 참조해서 데카르트가 상호 존중의 원칙을 공동으로 향유할 수 있게 하는 실천들을 통해 사회의 평화와 조화를 실현하고자 했고, 이러한 활동을 정치활동으로 이해했다고 주장한다. 우리는 이러한 주장을 『엘리자베스에게 1649년 9월에 보낸 편지』를 분석하여 정당화할 것이다. 결론적으로, 우리는 데카르트에게 정치란 자유의지에 토대를 둔 상호 존중을 공동적으로 향유하게 하는 활동임을 주장한다.

영문 초록

This paper asks whether there is a political thinking in Cartesian philosophy and, if so, what position it occupies. Descartes founded his ethics upon the virtue of generosity. Generosity is the self esteem, which includes esteem for others. As everyone has free will, self-esteem based on free will develops into esteem for others and esteem for each other. In this paper, we relate the Cartesian notion of generosity and the notion of love, especially the notion of friendship, to explain that self esteem includes reciprocal esteem between persons. In relation to this point, this paper argues that generosity is a civil virtue. Yet, if we look so far, Descartes' politics does not seem to be different from ethics. In relation to this problem, this paper examines the interpretation of Guenancia who denies the existence of politics in Descartes, then that of Kolesnik-Antoine. Moreover, referring to the interpretation of Kolesnik-Antoine, we argue that Descartes wanted, by the establishment of institutions that allow the common enjoyment of mutual esteem, to install peace and order in society, and that it is this activity that Descartes thinks of as political activity. We will justify this thesis, by analyzing the letter to Princess Elisabeth of September 1946. In conclusion, we argue that for Descartes politics is the activity that lets us commonly enjoy the mutual esteem based on free will.
