일본의 구승문예 연구동향과 전망

국문 초록

본 논고는 일본의 구승문예 장르를 정리하고, 최근 일본에서 주목을 받고 있는 장르를 소개함으로써 한국의 구비문학 연구자와 과제를 공유하기 위해 작성하였다. 일본 구승문예 장르는 한국의 구비문학과 크게 다르지 않다. 그러나 유사하면서도 고유의 특징을 지니는 장르도 있다. 한국의 판소리나 가면극, 굿과 비슷한 ‘가타리모노’는 일본 각지에서 다양하고 또 풍부하게 전해졌다. 그런데 20세기 중반부터 구비전승의 현장이 변화되면서 전승이 단절된 갈래도 적지 않아 현재 ‘가타리모노’는 흔히 접할 수 있는 문예라 말하기 어려운 상황이다. 그리고 지식인들이 쓴 한문작품이 풍부한 한국문학과 달리 일본문학은 구비전승에서 유래된 작품들이 문학의 주요 장르였다는 차이도 있다. 즉 일본문학에서 구비문학의 존재 의의가 크다는 점도 염두에 둘 만하다. 최근 일본 구승문예 중, 주목받고 있는 장르로는 요괴담과 재해전승을 들 수 있다. 일본인들은 예부터 괴이한 존재들을 문학작품이나 회화작품에 그리고 왔는데, 현대 사회에서도 괴상한 존재들의 소문이나 전설들이 인구에 회자된다. 최근에는 ‘요괴’란 말이 괴상한 존재 모두를 포괄하는 종칭으로 쓰이며 새로운 캐릭터가 탄생하기도 한다. 일본인들은 남녀노소를 막론하고 소설, 만화, 애니메이션, 게임소프트 등 다양한 작품을 통해 요괴의 세계를 즐기고 있다. 요괴담은 현대 사회에도 살아 있는 구비문학 장르인 것이다. 그리고 재해전승은 2011년에 발생한 동일본대지진을 계기로 그 가치가 재조명 받은 장르이다. 자연재해가 잦은 일본에서는 각지에서 재해와 관련된 전설, 즉 경험담이나 피해를 면하기 위한 이야기들이 전해진다. 이러한 이야기들이 발굴, 채록되어서 간행되면서 재해전승을 미래에 계승해 나갈 필요성도 제기되었다. 일본문학 연구자들의 최근의 동향 가운데 자연에 대한 관심을 들 수 있는데, 이는 자연과 거리가 가까운 구비문학 분야에서도 주목할 만한 주제이다. 일본인들이 자연을 어떻게 포착하고 어떻게 문학작품에 표현해 왔는지에 대한 문학연구자들의 연구 업적이 축적되는 중인데, 이는 기후위기 시대를 맞은 시대에 한자한문문화권에 속하는 동아시아 연구자들이 함께 공유, 생각해 나가야 할 주제이기도 하다.

영문 초록

This paper was written to share tasks with Korean oral literature researchers by summarizing the genre of old Seung Literature in Japan and introducing the genre that has recently attracted attention in Japan. Japanese and Korean oral literature genres do not differ very much. However, some genres are similar and have unique characteristics. Similar to Korean pansori, masquerade, and exorcism, "Katarimono" has been delivered in various and rich ways throughout Japan. However, since the early 20th century, the transmission has been cut off, from a significant number of branches, so it is difficult to assert that "Katarimono" is common literature. In addition, unlike Korean literature, which is rich in Chinese literature written by intellectuals, there is a difference in that oral literature was a major genre of Japanese literature. In other words, it is worth keeping in mind that the existence of oral literature in Japanese literature is significant. In recent Japanese oral literature, the genres that have attracted attention are ghost stories and disaster legends. The Japanese have painted strange beings in literature and painting works since ancient times, and even in modern times, rumors and legends of strange beings have been discussed among the population. Recently, the word "Yokai(specter)" has been used as a generic term encompassing all strange beings, and new characters have been born. Japanese people, regardless of age or gender, enjoy the world of monsters through various works such as novels, cartoons, animations, and game software. The ghost story is a genre of oral literature that remains alive in modern society. In addition, the value of disaster legends was re-examined in the wake of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. In Japan, where natural disasters are frequent, legends related to disasters-that is, stories about avoiding disasters-are told in various places. As these stories were discovered, recorded, and published, the need to inherit future disaster legends was raised. Among recent trends in Japanese literature, researchers demonstrate interest in nature, which is a notable topic in the field of oral literature. Literary researchers are accumulating achievements in how the Japanese perceive nature and expressed it in literary works a topic that East Asian researchers belonging to the Chinese character culture should share and think about in the era of the climate crisis.
