상상력이 지식보다 중요하다: Einstein의 착각?

국문 초록

“상상력이 지식보다 중요하다.”라고 한 Einstein의 말이 옳은지를 결정하기 위해 지식의 본질과 상상력의 본질을 인지심리학적 관점에서 분석한 후, 상상력과 지식 간의 관계를 검토하였다. 그 결과 지식과 상상력은 불가분의 관계에 있는 것으로 드러났다. 이 관계를 기초로, 지식은 상상력의 작용으로 확장되며, 상상력은 지식을 활용하기 위해 진화했다고 결론지었다. 지식과 상상력은, 호흡과 허파의 관계처럼, 상호의존성 관계에 있기 때문에, 상상력과 지식의 상대적 중요성을 묻는 질문은 아예 성립이 되지 않는다. 그러므로 상상력이 지식보다 중요하다는 Einstein의 판단은 착각이었다.

영문 초록

To determine the validity of the Albert Einstein's assertion that “imagination is more important than knowledge”, the nature of imagination, knowledge, and the relationship between them were analysed from the cognitive perspectives. The conceptual analyses revealed that the relationship between the two cognitive entities of knowledge and imagination is inseparable, suggesting that knowledge has been expanded through imagination only and that imagination has evolved to work upon knowledge. That the essence of the relationship between knowledge and imagination, like the relationship between breathing and the lung, is their interdependency lead us to the conclusion that the question, "is imagination more important than knowledge?" cannot be formulated, and that the assertion, "imagination is more important than knowledge", is invalid. The saying might be a simple mistake made by the great physicist, Albert Einstein. Believing the saying as true, however, is a big mistake made by a lot of people.
