한국의 영어교육에서 발산적 교수 방법에 관한 연구

국문 초록

본 연구 논문은 한국의 영어교실에서 발산적인 사고와 행위의 중요성과 효율성을 고찰한다. 무엇보다도 본 연구는 제 2 외국어로써의 영어교육에서 수렴적 기법과 비교되는 발산적 기법의 정의와 방법을 고찰하게 될 것이다. 그리고 주어진 설문지들을 통하여 세 개의 서로 다는 영어교사 집단 (공립학교의 한국인 영어교사 집단, 학원의 한국인 영어교사 집단, 영어권 원어민 교사 집단)의 경향과 교수 기법을 조사할 것이다. 사실, 한국의 영어교육은 명백하게 정의되어지는 질문에 가장 최선의 정답만을 찾아내는 쪽으로 수업의 방향이 진행되는 수렴적 기법에 초점을 둔다. 그러나, 본 연구는 영어교육 현장에서 발산적 기법의 중요한 역할에 대하여 고찰하는 것이 절대적으로 필요하다는 것을 강조한다. 그렇게 하기 위해서는 본 연구에서 대상집단인 세 개의 서로 다른 영어교사 집단의 수업유형과 방법 (즉, 발산적 기법을 선호하는 지 아니면 수렴적 기법을 선호하는지에 대한 조사)을 설문지법을 통하여 밝혀낼 것이고 이러한 발산적 기법이 한국의 영어교육에서 어떻게 자연스럽게 채택될지를 제안하게 될 것이다.

영문 초록

The foremost aim of this study was to investigate the English teaching activities of three different teacher groups through their questionnaires. This study, thus, considered the significance and effectiveness of divergent thinking and behavior in the Korean English classroom. First of all, this study reviewed the definition and methods of divergent production as compared to convergent production in English education as a Foreign Language classroom (EFL), and then investigated three different teacher groups’ teaching trends and inclinations (Korean teachers in public school, Korean teachers in private institute, and Native speaker teachers) via questionnaire provided. In fact, Korean English education has focused on the convergent productions, which are oriented towards deriving the single best answer to a clearly defined question. However, this study argued that it is imperative to reconsider the role of divergent production in the EFL setting. To do so, this study revealed the three different teacher groups’ styles and methods in teaching English (whether they prefer to convergent or divergent production) and it suggested how this divergent production can be adapted in the Korean EFL classroom. For data analysis, the Statistical Packages for the Social Sciences (SPSS) 10.0 version were used. For the research questions, Pearson correlations were calculated to examine the correlation among the items. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was utilized to find out any significant group differences in the mean scores of each item. Results generally show that the all Korean teacher groups prefer to use convergent ESL activities and the English native teacher group are partial to access divergent ones in their classrooms. Meanwhile, all teacher groups agreed about the following three realms: 1) divergent ESL activities can develop ESL learners' creativity; 2) convergent ESL activities can increase ESL learners' abilities for rote learning and memorization; and 3) convergent ESL activities can be regarded as those used easily in ESL classes.
