사찰의 현재와 미래 인식에 대한 재가자 기초 조사

국문 초록

2019년 겨울에 갑작스럽게 발견된 코로나19로 인해 사람들은 이전과는 다른 일상을 경험하였고, 종교활동에서도 비대면 활동이 도입되었다. 코로나19 백신 개발과 접종, 다양한 방역조치들로 서서히 일상을 되찾아 가고 있지만, 이전과는 다른 새로운 사회와 종교환경은 피할 수 없다. 이에 새로운 사회를 전망하고 준비하는 일은 더욱 중요해졌다. 이 연구는 이러한 목적에서 불교계와 종단에 대한 이해가 높은, 그리고 신행활동을 비교적 오랜 기간 유지하고 있는 신도들을 대상으로 온라인 조사를 진행하였다. 온라인 조사의 특성 때문에 오프라인에 의존하는 신도단체보다는 SNS를 활용한 신도단체/조직을 통한 참여가 많았다. 설문조사에 총 1,529명이 참여하였고, 이 중에서 부적절한 조사결과를 제외한 총 1,527명의 조사결과를 분석하였다. 이 연구는 신도 대상 여론조사 중에서 연구참여자들이 현재 사찰 행정과 재가종무원, 사찰의 시설 등에 대해 어떻게 생각하고 있는지, 미래사회에서의 사찰 역할과 활동에 대해 어떤 의견을 가지고 있는지를 주로 정리하였다. 분석 결과, 연구참여자들은 사찰의 행정과 재가종무원에 대해서 긍정적으로 평가했다. 하지만 신행기간이 긴 신도들은 오히려 부정적으로 평가하고 있었다. 또한 미래사회에서의 사찰의 역할은 지역민들을 위해 참여해야 하는 사회활동과 밀접하게 연관되어 있었다. 신도들은 미래사회에서 사찰이 정서적 지지를 제공하는 위로와 힐링공간, 복지와 빈곤문제에 관심을 가지고 참여하는 나눔과 봉사 공간이 되어야 한다고 생각하였다. 또한 연구참여자들은 사찰이 환경/생태 관련 사회활동에도 참여하고, 수행과 문화공간으로서 역할도 수행하기를 기대하고 있었다.

영문 초록

Due to COVID-19, which began in the winter of 2019, people experienced a different daily life than before, and non-face-to-face activities were introduced in religious activities. Although everyday life is gradually being restored with the development of COVID-19 vaccines, vaccinations, and various quarantine measures, a new social and religious environment that is different from before is inevitable. As a result, predicting and preparing for contemporary society became more important. For this purpose, this study conducted an online survey of Buddhists, who highly understand Korean Buddhism and maintained religious activities for a relatively longer belief time. Due to the characteristics of online surveys, there was more participation through Buddhist lay' organizations using SNS than Buddhist lays who relied on offline, and a total of 1,529 people participated in the survey. Among them, 1,527 survey results were analyzed, excluding inappropriate survey results. This study mainly summarized what the survey participants think about the current administrative affairs and employees of the temple and facilities of the temple among the public opinion polls for Buddhist lays, and what public opinions they have on the role and activities of the temple in the future society. As a result of the analysis, the survey participants positively evaluated the administration and the temple employees, but the Buddhists with a longer belief time were rather negative. In addition, the role of temples in future society was closely related to social activities that had to be participated in for the local people. The Buddhist lays thought that in the future society, temples should be a space for comfort and healing that provides emotional support and a space for sharing and volunteering with interest in welfare and poverty issues. In addition, temples were expected to play a role as a performance and cultural space and participate in social activities related to environmental/ ecological problems.
